content overload

Overwhelmed with content overload? Here's a guide on how you can pick the best movies or TV series from the sea of choices on streaming platforms.

You wake up early, rush to catch the train, work all day without breaks, and come back home tired. You know you need to rest it out but part of you wants to steal some time for yourself. So, you ignore that feeling and turn on the TV or open an app on your phone. But then you're faced with so many shows and movies. What to watch? Before you know it, you've spent more time deciding than actually watching anything. Sound familiar? In today's digital age, there are endless shows and movies available, making it hard to choose. With new releases dropping constantly, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of options. However by exploring different genres, you can find your way through the content overload and discover a world of entertainment suited to your tastes.

Here’s how you can choose!

Comfort and familiarity

Few things are as comforting as indulging in your favourite genre. Whether it's the funny jokes in a sitcom, the exciting moments in a thriller, or the cosy feeling of a romantic comedy, sticking to what you already love can make you feel stable, especially when things are tough. When I feel overwhelmed, I usually rewatch Gilmore Girls or watch a Priyardarshan movie. Any genre that you're used to and doesn't require much thinking is perfect.

Exploration and discovery

From time to time, one feels so bored of monotony that one craves something new. Watching something new every now and then can add a little excitement to your viewing routine. Watching a foreign film can introduce you to a new culture while true crime documentaries can intrigue, entertain, and scare you all at the same time. And who knows? Trying out a genre you've never seen before might just uncover a hidden gem that becomes your new favourite. For instance, when a colleague suggested I give K-dramas a try, I watched ‘Hometown Cha Cha Cha’ and ‘Daily Dose of Sunshine’ and guess who is hooked to K-dramas now! So, while it's nice to stick with the familiar, don't be afraid to venture into the unknown from time to time - it might lead to some unexpectedly awesome discoveries!

Escapism and fantasy

After a long, hectic day at work, it can feel refreshing to escape into a fantastical world where anything is possible! It's almost like stepping into another dimension, where, even if only for a few hours, the worries and stresses of your everyday life melt away. You can soar through the stars in a gripping sci-fi epic or embark on a thrilling quest in a magical fantasy realm. Such a cinema can transport you to far-off lands, where the possibilities are endless and the adventures are thrilling. These genres can offer a much-needed respite from the chaos and routine of daily life.

Emotional catharsis and connection

One of the best things about movies and TV is how they make us feel. They can really tug at your heartstrings by getting you involved with the characters and stories. We've all cried during a sad movie, laughed along with friends during a funny one, or felt motivated after watching something inspiring. Certain types of movies and shows can really touch us deep inside. So, if you're ever unsure about what to watch, try finding something that speaks to your emotions.
