Films like Saiyaara

The credits rolled and tears streamed down your face but if you want to keep feeling that broken-yet-healed feeling Saiyaara left you with, here are some films that might help.

What is it about heartbreaking films where your heart is shattered into pieces but somehow, you feel healed by the end? Is it the soulful music that says what words never could? Or the cast, whether newcomers or veterans, who draw you in so deeply that you feel everything they do? Or is it that buried ache you’ve carried for too long that's finally finding its release? Maybe it’s all of that in a way of having a catharsis of letting it all out, no matter how unexplainable. Because otherwise, why would a film that talks about a young, talented musician devoid of love and desperate for the world to give it only to finally find it in a heartbroken girl but losing it all to memory loss, become the talk of the nation? Why would a story where the world learns his name but the girl he loves forgets it, drive people back to theatres in huge crowds?

Saiyaara is one of those films that are not meant to be explained; they're only meant to be felt. And maybe that's what makes it work because this is what we’ve forgotten how to do. We’ve become so obsessed with intellectualizing emotions with trying to analyze or philosophize our feelings that we’ve forgotten the most essential part - feeling your feelings. That’s what this film reminds us - to give in, to fall so deeply in love that even Alzheimer’s can’t erase it. Though this isn’t the first time we’ve felt this way. Most of us grew up crying into our pillows after watching many films like this.

So, if you're still aching from Saiyaara, here are a few more films that hurt just as beautifully and heal you just as unexpectedly with their music, cast, and a love story for the ages!

A Star Is Born- JioHotstar

This umpteenth version of the same-name film is about love that wraps you up in its arms so tight. It lifts you up so much that even giving up your life for that one person doesn’t seem too much especially when you become a hindrance to their journey. Something like Aashiqui 2, where Rahul dies for Aarohi to flourish, as much as he dies out of his own cowardice.

Lootera- JioHotstar and Prime Video

An adaptation of a written short story, this poetic ballad of a film is all about that sacrifice in love where one waits for death to catch up to them, hanging on to the last leaf on the tree, and the other sacrifices their life to give them that hope forever. So they live for as long as they can, only to die themselves in an attempt to do that.

The Notebook- YouTube

A timeless adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel, The Notebook traces two soulmates whose love endures separation, changing seasons, and even memory loss. The tragedy here isn't just in forgetting, but in remembering what once was and could never be again. It reminds us that true love always finds a way back, even if only for a moment.

Sanam Teri Kasam- Zee5

A film that found a resurgence during its re-release, this film had most of the heartbroken boys turn paglu for love. One where a rurly angry man, mad at the world, falls in love with his bechari queen of a woman. Instead of fighting the world, he fights for her even when it means that he will lose her to cancer one day. He fights till the end to give her everything she wants.

Titanic- JioHotstar

An iconic film where, for the first time, the world learned how the impact of love goes beyond death. Jack, a carefree guy who couldn’t be bothered with anything, sacrifices his life to save Rose, a sheltered, naive girl who lets go of all her status and cultured life for Jack. She finds herself in him, as much as he finds an anchor in her, while the ship wrecks their life but not their love, which goes on forever.

Rockstar- Zee5

An ultimate film on the dil toota aashiq that philosophizes the idea that a broken heart creates the best art. It follows the journey of a talented singer who only becomes a raging musician when he meets the tragedy of love. It is a meditation on the idea of a heartbroken artist, where Jordan’s tragic love story is romanticized, first as he rages at the world, and then at himself, as his Heer is taken away from him.

La La Land- Prime Video

This musical paints the portrait of love and asks a heartbreaking question - what if the greatest act of love is letting go? Here, we see two people passionately in love with each other but unable to make it work; they wonder that rather than becoming a hindrance to each other’s dreams what if they become each other’s biggest champions, even if it means staying apart forever!

Laila Majnu- Netflix

The love story that has been told for ages, this one gives us Majnu as the aashiq whose love for Laila is so intense that he turns mad in it and she's the only person who understands his madness and is ready to jump in with him. They are the epitome of two lovers dying for each other, like Romeo and Juliet, only to be reunited beyond this materialistic, mortal world, making their love immortal.
