From Loveyapa to Housefull 5, this year had a plethora of content that didn't quite sit well with the viewers and here's why we could have simply done without them!
There are films and series that, despite sincere intentions, simply don’t land with the impact they aim for and that’s understandable. These, however, fall into a different category altogether! Some projects leave you genuinely wondering what they were trying to say or why they were greenlit at all. While the hard work of the teams behind them is undeniable, the purpose and clarity of their vision feels lost in translation. This list highlights films and shows that might have benefited from more thought, sharper intent, or a clearer sense of direction because, at this point, they’re titles we probably could have done without this year!
Check it out!
Salakaar - JioHotstar
A show inspired from the life of Ajit Doval where an Indian agent is sent to Pakistan for an undercover mission to stop Pakistan to build a nuclear bomb feels like an overdramatic disservice to legends of Doval as well as a fictitious espionage thriller.
Mistry - JioHotstar
A show that is an adaptation inspired by Monk, follows a detective whose OCD gives him the uncanny ability to notice clues even seasoned police officers miss. The problem isn’t the show’s adaptation of a Western original but that despite being a scene-by-scene copy of the original, only resetting it in an Indian setting, yet repeatedly it fails to deliver the same charm or effectiveness.
Mastiii 4 and Housefull 5 - Theatres and Amazon Prime Video
Both films fall right into the year’s most unnecessary content, driven by a desperate attempt to revive the outdated ‘boys’ locker-room’ style of comedy. Instead of feeling nostalgic, the humour lands as borderline offensive, sexist, and aggressively crass. It’s a cheap, tone-deaf return to mind-numbing gags that should have been left behind long ago.
Mere Husband Ki Biwi - JioHotstar
Starring Bhumi Pednekar, Arjun Kapoor and Rakul Preet Singh, Mere Husband Ki Biwi is as delusional and bizarre as one can get. This isn’t a love triangle and neither is it a story about ‘the other woman’. It is a two-and-a-half hour story that leads to absolutely nothing and logic leaves the chat from the very first frame itself.
Sarzameen - JioHotstar
Directed by Kayoze Irani,Sarzameen proved to be rather disappointing even after having Kajol and Prithiviraj Sukumaran in the leads. The screenplay falls flat and fails to build mystery for a plot as intense as this. To add to that, Ibrahim Ali Khan’s performance didn't help shaping this film into a stand out this year either. The backstories and the conflict simply fail to connect with you as an audience!
Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan - Zee5
Shanaya Kapoor’s debut film was exhaustingly long and felt nothing close to a rom-com like it claimed to be. The premise not only starts on a problematic note between her and Vikrant Massey’s character, but also feels rather insensitive towards people who are actually visually impaired.
The Royals - Netflix
The Royals felt like it was going to be a modern day prince falling in love with a commoner story that would have us swooning. But it turned out to be an absolute misrepresentation of the royals in India, had the internet trolling Ishaan Khatter and especially Bhumi Pednekar on her performance in the show and the lack of research on the makers’ part!
Loveyapa - JioHotstar
Khushi Kapoor and Junaid Khan starrer Loveyapa lacked heart and proved to be a remake that simply wasn’t up to the mark. Their acting in particular became a topic of discussion on the internet as their chemistry was anything but romantic and the film was truly something we could probably do without this year
The Trial Season 2 - JioHotstar
It’s hard not to like a project that stars Kajol in it but The Trial season 2 managed to do that as well. This season had very disappointing character arcs and its storyline simply wasn’t doing much to keep us hooked to the series. Kajol’s Noyonika Sengupta, who the series relies on, was getting lost in the innumerable things happening this season and Sheeba Chaddha, Alyy Khan and Kubra Sait weren’t able to keep this sinking ship from drowning.
Nadaaniyan - Netflix
Marking Ibrahim Ali Khan’s debut, Nadaaniyan was yet another Bollywood rom-com that left us disappointed this year. Was it because of poor performances from leads, Khushi Kapoor and Ibrahim Kapoor or an unconvincing plot, or both? Who knows! One thing is for certain - Bollywood rom-coms have lost their charm!
