2024 has been a remarkable year for classic films that were re-released on the big screen. Here’s every film from the good old days we loved re-living this year!
With changing times comes new cinema…..is what one would expect! But sometimes the evergreen classics show us that they are ‘classics’ and still so loved for a reason! In 2024, we saw a resurgence in re-releasing movies that were blockbuster hits during their times and an entire generation grew up on them. If you were a 90s or early 2000s kid, this year with all the re-releases must have felt like you've opened the door to your childhood, to the simpler times all over again! Box offices this year earned way more through these old classics than they did with most new releases, and that’s saying a lot about films made in 2024!
This trend started when Chak De! India and ZNMD were re-released earlier this year followed by Veer-Zaara which brought in the crowd. Then for every special anniversary, re-releasing that film became a way of honoring its memory. Kareena Kapoor Khan completed 25 years in the film industry and PVR hosted a Kareena Kapoor film festival in her honor. This is when classics like K3G and Jab We Met were re-released. Kal Ho Naa Ho completed 21 years this year and Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein had a milestone anniversary as well, hence both films had packed cinema halls yet again.
It seems like once this formula was known to work this well, the industry started re-releasing some classic rom-coms like Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani, Wake Up Sid and Laila-Majnu, a film that initially did not find its audience. Nostalgia is what we want to hold on to as much as possible. Solely for that reason, these films brought back the energy the cinema halls once missed!

The audience was right when they said they simply don’t make films like these anymore!
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
If any one of us was asked to give an introduction into Bollywood, this movie would be the bible for it! It has a little bit of everything. The extravagant sets and dance numbers, romance that just makes you weak in the knees and lots of family drama! A film that heavily influences Indian pop culture even today, its re-release felt like a dream come true for so many of us, so much so that theatres were packed with an audience who spoke out most popular monologues.
Kal Ho Naa Ho
Even though the film ends on a sad note, theatres were filled solely for the songs and SRK! And who wouldn’t love a surprise visit from Sweetu?
Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein
The amount of Reels people made while going to watch this film was insane! The very first scene where Maddy sees Reena for the first time in the rain was really what pulled the audience back to the theaters. Simply because most of us want to experience a love at first sight like that!
Jab We Met
Geet will be etched in our hearts forever and honestly these surprise visits from the leads just adds to the fun of going and watching an old film.
Rockstar
I would watch Kun Faya Kun at least ten times on the big screen if I could! Rockstar’s album was made for the big screen so it fully made sense to re-release the film!
Veer-Zaara
Any Shah Rukh Khan film on the big screen is always welcome and we’re more than lucky we got three this year!
Laila-Majnu
A film that did not do well at the box office when it initially released, Laila-Majnu appreciated much more when it came on OTT. Hence when the film was re-released this year, the audience was more than willing to go watch it this time around!
Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani
Another anniversary special that made us relive the early 2000s comedy that we miss so much all over again, it was nice to watch a cute simple rom-com for once.
Wake Up Sid
Wake up Sid was way ahead of its times, which is why it stays relevant today! This coming of age film is about finding your true calling and that never changes no matter which generation you come from!
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
PVR’s line up for summer 2024 brought us a film that truly hits differently each time we watch. It’s one of those movies that gives you a new perspective as you keep growing older and widen your lens of looking at life.
Tumbbad
A thriller-horror marvel, Tumbbad was a film that people were more than eager to go re-watch now that a lot more people know about it!
Chak De! India
Chak De! India was re-released around Women’s Day this year and watching it made me realize how it still proves that it was first of its kind in many ways!
Deewar
This year, we celebrated the remarkable writing duo of Salim-Jaaved. And Deewar was one of the many films that were released this year in their honor.
