We all know a cameo is a bonus, but in some films, these special appearances became the main event!
We love surprises, especially in cinema and when they come in the form of cameos - it's safe to say that we lose our minds! Cameos have long been cheered on by fans for the extra dose of entertainment, comfort and fun they provide. This year was no different for Indian cinema enthusiasts as they were given a little bit of everything right from meta-satire, exciting segues to regional crossovers. Not only did these crossovers steal the show, they also became the biggest talking points of the film.
Here is a look at some of the most exciting cameos of the year!
Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub - Tere Ishq Mein
A cameo that’s winning hearts off late is Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub’s Murari in Tere Ishq Mein. Despite the audience having mixed reactions towards the film, viewers are in awe of Ayyub’s cameo, which serves as an anchor to the film’s thematic origins. His entry post interval features him interacting with Dhanush’s Shankar, where the former is at his lowest and inspires him towards finding purpose in his life, citing the example of a ‘friend’ (Kundan from Ranjhanna) he lost over the cause of love, in a way saving Shankar from meeting with the same fate as Kundan. The scene is receiving the loudest cheer from the audience and is being praised for its powerful writing that connects the two films.
Shah Rukh Khan - The Ba***ds of Bollywood
The Ba***ds of Bollywood featured a slew of heart-winning cameos that took the internet by storm earlier this year, and fans still can’t stop going gaga over it. However, Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo during the 'Filmfirst Awards' particularly stood out for the fans where the actor injected his star power and self-deprecating humor into the satirical narration of the show. The cameo begins with the megastar entering the event with his team only to lose his mind over the ‘humbling’ incidents he encounters not once but twice, first when Avatar Singh (Manoj Pawha) refuses to meet him and later when Jairaj (Rajat Bedi) gets on his nerves, in an unreasonable yet hilarious attempt to demean him, propelling him to question his credibility as the ‘Badshah’ of Bollywood.
Saurabh Shukla - Raid 2
Saurabh Shukla reprised his iconic role as the flamboyant and corrupt politician, Tauji in a nostalgic cameo that connected the two films. Following the events of the 2018 film, where Ajay Devgn's IRS officer Amay Patnaik strips him of his ill-gotten wealth, Raid 2 features him briefly in a jail cell, scheming for a parole while offering a wry commentary on Patnaik’s new investigation targeting another politician, Dada Bhai (Riteish Deshmukh). Shukla’s menacing demeanour and dry wit as the mighty leader overshadowed every other actor in the frame, making him one of the biggest attractions of watching the film.
Prajakta Koli - Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari
Prajakta Koli delivered a heartwarming surprise as Dimple, the bride of Rohit Saraf’s character Vikram in Shashank Khaitan’s romantic comedy Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, in a clever crossover from the Netflix series Mismatched. While fans of the show were left heartbroken after their engagement was called off in season 3, the film's wedding sequence in the climax came across as a relief for them. In the film, Dimple’s entrance clears up a chaotic misunderstanding involving Varun Dhawan's Sunny and Janhvi Kapoor's Tulsi, as she playfully slaps Vikram in jest before affirming her love for him. Koli's unfailing charm and chemistry with Saraf reignited the fan craze, with viewers terming the cameo as a happy ending for the couple in a parallel universe.
Aamir Khan - Coolie
Aamir Khan's extended cameo in Lokesh Kanagaraj's Tamil action thriller Coolie, saw him reuniting with Rajinikanth after three decades in a stylish and power-packed role. Essaying the enigmatic Dahaa in the film's climax, Khan delighted his fans with his sharp dialogues, comic timing, and some effortless charm. With Rajinikanth portraying a gold smuggler battling a ruthless syndicate led by Nagarjuna, Khan's surprise entry delivered a high-octane sequence packed with banter and swag, blending Bollywood intensity with Kollywood drama!
