All We Imagine as Light

Being a woman is the most beautiful, complex and layered feeling all at the same time. 2024, portrayed that in abundance and we’re only but grateful!

Since the dawn of time, the entertainment industry has been a very male dominated field. But with changing times, we saw the women take centre stage more and more. While we're happy to see that, we'd still say the scale isn't that well-balanced. We're not seeing a woman carry a story as often as we'd like to. Having said that, 2024 as a year has been insanely progressive with its stories that were made for women, by women! Be it taking over a heist which turns out to be a comedy of errors, learning how to take control of your life, solving a gruesome murder mystery, celebrating your first period, dancing in a larger than life musical, or highlighting the importance of sexual pleasure, this year was truly for women from all walks of life!

Here’s how women paved the way this year!

Satya- Jigra

Satya felt like a flag bearer for the elder daughter club, the one who grew up way before she should have, who had to take on the role of a parent for her younger sibling and who would literally go till any extent to protect her loved ones, because that's literally what she does in the film. Alia Bhatt accurately tapped into the emotion of being someone's 'didi' and that made so many of us feel seen! Satya is a testament to a woman's will power and resillience and how she fully can take on a man in fight if she wanted to!

Divya, Jasmine, Geeta - Crew

Rarely has it been that a comedy film has been made with an all female star cast. Divya (Kriti Sanon), Jasmine (Kareena Kapoor Khan), Geeta (Tabu), were three hardworking air hostesses who were simply done with not getting paid by the airline. Hence it leads to the three planning a full proof heist. The three characters were not only a hilarious trio together but also highlighted how most women are consistently torn between work and juggling their personal lives.

Phool and Jaya- Laapataa Ladies

A simple film that left a huge impact on us this year, Laapataa Ladies was directed by a woman, written by a woman and made for the women of this world. Jaya and Phool gave us lessons on healthy female friendships, women empowerment, and redefining feminism for so many who have forgotten what the term meant in the first place. It's totally understandable why this film gained so much recognition worldwide!

Jaspreet Bumrah- The Buckingham Murders

This murdery mystery has detective Jaspreet Bumrah in the middle of it all. She gives it her all in bringing justice to a kid who was ruthlessly murdered whilst dealing with her own dark past. Kareena Kapoor Khan adds another versatile character to her filmography and we loved seeing her in two polar opposite roles this year. In a generation that grew up with Sherlock Holmes, Byomkesh Bakshi, Herclues Poirot amongst many other male detective stories, seeing a woman solve murder mysteries is one that we haven't seen much at all!

Bella Chaudhary - Call Me Bae

Bae aka Bella Chaudhary is the Indian Elle Woods we always wanted but never had! While the show comes across as a frivolous time pass watch, it is way more than just that. Bae drops her entire empire to stand on her own feet and make a living for herself, through love, drama and lots of self discovery. And hence this show became rather relatable to a lot of women out there.

Gurveen, Tanvi, Kiran, Swati, Jyoti - Sharmajee Ki Beti

5 women of different age groups and walks of life show how varied and complex the life of a girl child can be. One’s a homemaker, one’s just got her period and is rather happy about it, one just figured out her sexuality, and one is breaking barriers in her career. But overall, it is these women who run the world and define what true strength and resilience can really look like!

Jeong-Suk, Ju-Ri, Geum-Hee and Young-Bok - A Virtuous Business

A K-drama that shattered stereotypes this year, Virtuous Business revolves around four women who, for various reasons, start a business for adult toys and promote self pleasure. They embark on a peculiar journey of learning what works for them in the bedroom, what doesn’t and how sex is meant to be enjoyed by women as well! Jeong-Suk and Ju-Ri were single mothers who faced a lot of judgement from society for raising their sons alone, but the two strong headed women did everything they could to give their children the best education. Geum-Hee was from a wealthy family but didn't have a say at home for a lot of things, hence this business gives her a new purpose in life. Young-Bok was a mother of five with a good for nothing husband. Instead of whining about how unfortunate she is, she worked hard to bring food on the table. Throughout the show there was so much to take away from these women!

Galinda and Elphaba- Wicked Part 1

Wicked, on the outside, looks like a peppy musical that’s about friendship and the journey of two women who choose different paths.Galinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) were two polar opposite personalities but destiny intertwined their faiths forever. Galinda was the popular girl in school who always wore pink and Elphaba loved reading books and was extremely opinionated. What we love about the story is that it doesn't belittle one to make the other look good, infact it brings them together and creates a beautiful friendship on-screen.

Dia, Roohi, Jayshree, Noor, Pluggy - Big Girls Don’t Cry

Big Girls Don’t Cry is a Gen Z coming of age tale about sisterhood which was rather relatable to today’s generation. In content today where women are constantly pitted against each other, it was refreshing to see women lifting each other up and growing together. Dia, Roohi, Jayshree, Noor and Pluggy all have different mindsets from one another. But what we loved about these characters is that even though their friendship had its ups and downs, they commit to making it work with one another!

Mira- Girls Will Be Girls

In a strict boarding school nestled in the Himalayas, 16-year-old Mira discovers desire and romance, but her rebellious sexual awakening is disrupted by her mother, who never got to come of age herself. Mira's crush on her classmate, takes you back to the time when you first fell in love with someone. How your heart races when you see them, the first kiss, one sided love and so much more! She is what most of us girls were when we were young girls in school and it was rather nostalgic to visit that!

Prabha and Anu- All We Imagine As Light

Prabha, a nurse living in Mumbai, looks for a place in the city where Anu, her roommate, and her lover can finally make love. The two women travel to a coastal town that becomes a space of freedom for their desires. Prabha’s journey to find some privacy is turbulent to say the least. She represents how most couples struggle with basic privacy in India, especially if they’re queer!
