Chhaava

Just like the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, there are many unheard stories of bravery in the Swarajya empire and these movies portray that with utmost authenticity!

Ever since we were in school, we have heard tales of how brave and intelligent Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was. But as we grew up and dug deeper into the stories of our rich Indian history, we got to know that while Shivaji Maharaj was the face and brains of the empire, there were many unsung heroes behind him who fought to keep the Swarajya dream alive. One such story was about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, his son, whose biopic, Chhaava is now breaking records at the box office and is leaving a huge impact on audiences across the country.

But if you’re someone who still wants to learn more about the fascinating stories that entailed back then, there’s a plethora of Marathi movies to binge on. While these movies did rather well in the Marathi film industry when they were released, they’re still lesser known to the masses today. From stories about Tanhaji Malsure, the military commander of the Maratha kingdom to Hirkani, a courageous milkmaid during that era, there’s a lot that we don’t know about and would be left stunned if we did!

Pawankhind - Prime Video

On a dreadful night in 1660, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj finds himself cornered in the Panhala fort by the Bijapur Sultanate. However, the Maratha commanders risk their lives to save their leader. The story is a testament to Baji Prabhu Deshpande’s valor and his loyalty towards Shivaji Maharaj.

Hirkani - Prime Video

Hirkani was the milkmaid who delivered milk to Raigad everyday. One day, when she leaves later than usual, she finds out that the gates of Raigad are already shut and she is now stuck inside the fort until the next morning. But this becomes a huge dilemma for her as her child is home alone. In order to go back to her toddler, she decides to scale down a steep cliff from Raigad, back to her house.

This highlights the fact that bravery didn’t just exist within the forts of the swarajya but amongst citizens who lived there as well. It tugs your heart to see the extent a mother can go to be with her child. She was the reason why Shivaji Maharaj realises that his fort isn’t as secure as he thought it would be, and builds higher walls around it so enemies cannot climb up and down the fort, the way she did!

Sher Shivaji - Prime Video

The film deep dives into the infamous meeting between Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan, how Shivaji Maharaj outsmarts him and his army and wins the battle of Pratapgad even though his men were lesser in numbers.

Shivrayancha Chhava - Prime Video

Consider this a detailed and a Marathi version of Chhaava. The story begins right from Sambhaji Maharaj’s childhood, how he learnt sword fighting, horse riding and went on to become just as fierce as his father was. This movie could give you a different perspective on the current one that people are loving so much and probably learn something more about Sambhaji Maharaj’s journey.

Fatteshikast - ZEE5

Ever thought about how Shivaji Maharaj entered Laal Mahal in the middle of night in Pune and left Shaista Khan and his army absolutely shaken? Fatteshikast is just the visualization you need to a story that we’ve only heard but never seen unfold in front of us.

Subhedar - Prime Video

Tanhaji Malsure was one of the irreplaceable gems of swarajya and Subhedar is a tribute to him. From supervising the construction of the Sindhudurg sea fort to the construction of roads in Tal Kokan, he contributed vastly to the kingdom. But more than anything, his sacrifice during the battle of Sinhagad is something that’ll linger on your mind for months on end.

Farzand - Prime Video

Kondaji Farzand, along with a large group of warriors, fight valiantly to re-capture the Panhala fort from Adil Shah. He is definitely someone who not many people know about and through Farzand, director Digpal Lanjekar has made a sincere effort to put forth Kondaji's story on the map.
