The ultimate recap you need before Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 drops!

The world of monsters is here again, bringing with it questions like what happened and how it ended. So here's a quick recap of Season 1 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

In just two days, we revisit the world of Titans with the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. From the cryptic origins of Monarch, the titan-studying organisation, to the secrets of Axis Mundi, a dimension where time is on steroids, the first season delivered more than what was asked for. So there's a lot to recap in very little time.

A quick season one recap

The Randa siblings, Cate Randa (Anna Sawai) and Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe), have reunited with their father, Hiroshi Randa (Takehiro Hira). But, they also saved Hiroshi's mother and Monarch's Founder, Dr Keiko (Mari Yamamoto), who was presumed dead when she fell through a portal. During a confrontation with the Ion Dragon, Cate and older Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell), best friends of Keiko and Bill Randa (Anders Holm), get trapped in Axis Mundi, a dimension that exists alongside the Hollow Earth. There, they find Keiko andsurvive the fight between Godzilla and the Ion Dragon, but while escaping the dimension, Lee Shaw gets left behind.

While this is happening during 2015, a year after the infamous G-Day event from the first Godzilla film, 57 years ago in 1958, Dr Keiko has formed Monarch with husband Dr Bill Randa and young Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) to study the Titans and their activities. After her disappearance, Bill and Lee develop a rift while trying their best to keep the organisation intact. 

What's Axis Mundi?

Axis Mundi will be a key location in the second season, a place where the Titan X is invading from. It was first shown in the ninth episode, and what we learned goes beyond logic. The dimension is adjacent to the Hollow Earth, but it's a far more volatile place. It's shown as a buffer zone between our world and the Hollow Earth, where time flows differently. For our characters, Keiko was trapped there for 57 years, but to her, it's only been 56 days; a day there is the equivalent of a year on Earth. Another thing to note is that Axis Mundi has its own flora and fauna that have evolved rapidly due to this time dialation.

Secrets of Monarch

Keiko built Monarch to protect and understand the Titans without any military involvement, hoping to save them. But after her disappearance, her husband Bill set out to protect the Titans from the very military trying to kill them. Meanwhile, Lee chose to safeguard the organisation by handing it over to the military so the tracking of the Titans could continue. However, the two men she left behind ended up protecting different things. Now that she’s alive and returning, she will realise that their disappearance didn’t just pull them apart, it slowly destroyed both the dreams she once built Monarch for.

The first face-off

Cate and Lee spent a day in Axis Mundi, so when she returns with Keiko, a year has already passed, bringing them to 2017, a year before the events of the second Godzilla film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. While that in itself is amazing since this new season could fill the gaps between the first two films, the ending of season one also features the girls returning to Skull Island, home of the great ape King Kong. With the trailer emphasising how both Godzilla and Kong need to team up to defeat the Titan X, it could set the premise of the third film, Godzilla vs Kong, where a King stands off against a God.

What about Titan X?

Titan X is a semi-aquatic monstrosity from Axis Mundi who's invading the balance of our world's natural order. While season one doesn't hint at the monster, it has showcased several monsters that feature massive mutations and an aggressive stance towards everything. The trailer reveals some bits of how Titan X looks, and fans were quick to figure out a familiar Titan from the comics called Na Kika, also known as theKraken. The Titan is said to be extremely intelligent with over 8 brains throughout its body.

Which films to rewatch?

While the first season took place soon after the first film and ended before the events of the second film. The new season could pick up from or after the Godzilla: King of the Monsters film and extend towards Godzilla X Kong. The trailer does reveal the gang visiting Skull Island, giving fans reasons to watch out for easter eggs from the Kong: Skull Island film and the Netflix series Skull Island.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 will feature more adventures of Keiko, Bill and Lee, and the characters from the current timeline would face Titan X. It could also provide more information regarding the Titans and Monarch between films.
