Produced by Shondaland, The Residence is Netflix’s new murder mystery that has us hooked into its world and Cordelia Cupp is a major reason for that. Here’s why!
Shonda Rhimes has given us yet another show to binge on after Shondaland's super successful Bridgerton franchise. Under her banner, she’s produced a new Netflix show called ‘The Residence’, and I can assure you that you’ll be lured into this world of murder mysteries and be hooked from the first frame to the last. Shonda Rhimes and Paul William Davies paint a fictional White House for us where a lot of things wouldn’t exist in real life. But they sell this fictional version to us so convincingly that we buy it without any second guessing at all. The show revolves around a state dinner at The White House hosted for Australian diplomats. But things go south when someone finds the chief usher of The White House aka A.B. Wynters dead on the third floor. Here’s when Cordelia Cupp, the best detective in the world, who is known to solve the most unsolved mysteries, is called to investigate. Hence it goes without saying that she finds many things, people and stories odd and the fact that everyone could have a motive.
The more people loathe her presence inside the White House, the more you find her fascinating as an audience. She is not only confident about her opinions but she is also open to admitting when she doesn’t know something. And of course, her patience when things go south in that residence deserves an award in itself!

Here’s more on why she stands out in the series!
She has no suspects, she just has people who she finds interesting….
There are no suspects in Cordelia’s world; it’s just people and their stories that she finds ‘interesting’. She believes that anyone and everyone is capable of hiding secrets and instead of following a done and dusted path, she re-invents methods of investigation in a murder. Having ‘suspects’ would just narrow down the story instead of looking at the whole scenario as a larger picture.
The way she uses birding to solve real life cases is what makes her a cut above the rest
Every genius detective we have seen on-screen so far has a neurotic side to them. For Codelia, it’s her obsession with birding. Birding as a hobby is lesser known to the world, but it has a community of its own around the world. It’s basically for people who love watching exotic/rare birds in the most unheard of places on Earth. So when Cordelia had to cut her trip short so she could come solve a murder mystery at the White House, she had her own list of birds to gawk at within the famous residence. She then uses these birds as metaphors to explain theories about the murder to her team, and sometimes herself too.
She looks beyond what you and I notice in a murder mystery and can analyze human behavior like no other
It’s human tendency to suspect and make up a story based on what we see right in front of us. But Cordelia has the ability to notice things beyond what normal people like us can even think of. The minute she walked in to see A.B. Wynter’s body, she knew it wasn’t suicide. From the missing knife to the fact that the blood stains on him weren’t even his, she left everyone in that room and us, feeling stupid for not looking more thoroughly.
She is open to discussing every theory that’s on the table
Instead of drawing her own path, she is open to discussing every single possibility and every theory that could have led to the murder. Discussing every thought on the table is in fact how she starts eliminating people and narrows down who could’ve done it.
She subtly breaks stereotypes in a male dominated field
From having men like Edwin Park from the FBI work under her to actually showing a lot of influential men in that room their place, Cordelia Cupp really stops at nothing! I love the fact that she always stands her ground and behaves the way any man in her position would have and gotten away with it!
Her memory is not to be underestimated!
The members of the staff thought they could easily cook up stories each time they were interrogated but here’s the thing about Cordelia - you tell her one thing and she won’t ever forget that. Not a single detail slips her mind, at one point the people she was interrogating would forget what they initially said but not her, and that’s simply why she was the chosen one for this case!
