Aamir Khan is a name synonymous with experiments and unconventional choices. His bold approach towards cinema goes beyond the rules of stereotypical Bollywood movies.
As a zealot, if there’s a celebrity who fits right into my idea of a superstar it's Aamir Khan, an actor par excellence, a kind human, and most importantly a responsible citizen who uses his voice and impact to bring about a positive change. We often talk about how dedicated Aamir is towards his craft, his unimaginable body transformation, efforts to get the dialects right, and laser-like perfection in every take. However, one quality that sets him apart from others is the ownership he takes for his actions. Aamir has actively participated in various social causes and given strong opinions on national issues.

His filmography too mirrors his inclination towards undertaking projects that have strong messages. A considerable number of his films have brought about awareness or have at least sparked a conversation around issues of social interest. Be it discussions on shortcomings of our education system through 3 Idiots, standing up against a corrupt system in Rang De Basanti or giving a girl child an equal opportunity in Dangal, Aamir’s films have been instrumental in changing perceptions.
This intent to do something meaningful yet entertaining can also be traced in the films his production house, Aamir Khan Productions, has produced. He has backed number of films with strong, often unconventional plots that were appreciated by fans and critics alike. It is said that content is king, but in this whirlwind of world-class films and shows, courtesy of liberalization and the advent of the internet, great stories too can get lost if there is not a big name associated with it, especially the ones that are more artsy than commercial.
So here are some of Aamir Khan's unconventional and iconic production ventures that could have easily gone unnoticed, had he not produced them!
Lagaan
Lagaan was the first film that Aamir Khan produced. The plot of the movie was so unconventional that no producer was ready to back it, and the actor had to step in eventually. It was a risky venture as it didn’t fit into the template of a typical Bollywood film at that time. However, it was Aamir’s faith in the script that the movie turned into a reality and registered itself in the list of most iconic films to be ever made in Indian cinema. It also gained an Academy Award nomination and was lauded for the themes of progressive nationalism it promoted through its story of people standing up for their dignity and registering their revolt against the oppressors through a cricket match.
Taare Zameen Par
Taare Zameen Par was a sensitive and important film that stressed the importance of being patient with kids and giving them the wings to pursue their interests. It explored the subject of dyslexia which was rarely discussed in mainstream Hindi cinema. Aamir's involvement gave it the scale it needed to reach a wider audience. This film was pivotal in raising awareness about dyslexia and also to destigmatize it. The film’s tagline ‘Every child is special’ resonated with a lot of families as they underwent a course correction in how they approach the academic shortcomings of their children.
Peepli [Live]
Peepli [Live] was a satirical film about farmer suicides and how the media-political circus trivialises and makes a mockery of serious issues in our country. It was a bold and critical commentary on a national issue and was headlined by fresh actors. The fine film could have quietly tanked at the box office without anyone taking notice. However, Aamir’s support and genius marketing skills made all the difference and Peepli [Live] went on to be a commercial success as well.
Delhi Belly
Delhi Belly was a film well ahead of its time. The dark comedy was a pathbreaking departure from unspoken norms of traditional Hindi cinema. The story of three struggling roommates who unknowingly become the prey of a ruthless gangster had an edgy humor and unconventional narration. Aamir's willingness to take risks despite anticipating the criticism the film would attract for his bold narration allowed this film to be made. The film did spark a lot of debates and was labeled as inappropriate and indecent by certain sections of media however, the film was and is still loved by the youth.
Secret Superstar
Secret Superstar was a charming yet rooted story of a girl who dares to dream in an extremely conservative family. This movie focused on a loving mother-daughter duo who have their share of struggles living in a toxic and patriarchal household. This film was beautiful and an important experience for a regular Indian family, however, it would have trouble reaching the masses without the backing of Aamir.
Laapataa Ladies
Laapataa Ladies is Aamir’s recent production that reiterates his commitment to back films with strong social messages, and unique storytelling. The story was a refreshing commentary on patriarchy and the importance of woman empowerment in a society like ours. The film traced the journey of two lost brides and how they discover themselves in their testing times, but most importantly, the film also conveyed how wonderful things can happen when women support one another!
So, here’s to celebrating these unconventional films and this superstar! Happy birthday, sir!
