Cinema has had an incredible impact on people's minds and hearts since its inception. Watching a film might be an escape for some, but for the majority of people, it is an emotional investment. They carry the film, good or bad, with them for years, talking nonstop about the ones they loved and bashing the ones they didn't. Humans are emotional beings, and therefore, getting moved by stories is anything but natural.

Here, we explore some Bollywood characters that deserve happy endings!

Characters make stories. A large part of the reception of the film depends on the kind of impact its characters have on the audience. A good film or at least a well-written/performed character can leave a lasting impression on people’s minds. We laugh with them, rejoice in their happiness and sob in their sorrows. While the climax of certain characters filled us with immense joy, some also left us weeping at their fate. Our hearts went out to them, and we wished we could rewrite their ending. An ending that was kind and full of happiness that they rightfully deserved!

Take a look!

Chandramukhi from Devdas:

CM

Devdas is a tragic love story of Dev, a wealthy law graduate who intends to marry his childhood love, Paro, upon returning from London. His family, however, disapproves of their relationship, given the class differences, propelling him to alcoholism and emotional deterioration. He finds refuge in Chandramukhi, a gold-hearted courtesan. Chandramukhi devotes herself to taking care of Dev, despite him never reciprocating her feelings and even demeaning and dismissing them initially. Chandramukhi was bold and beautiful but also vulnerable. However, there was immense strength in her vulnerability as she epitomized selfless love but also stood up for herself and her dignity when needed!

Sameer from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

hddc

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is a story of love, loss, and upholding the sanctity of relationships. Sameer, an NRI returns to India to learn music from an esteemed but orthodox teacher. He falls in love with his teacher’s daughter Nandini, but he disapproves of their relationship and arranges her marriage with Vanraj, a lawyer, instead. Sameer was kind, open-minded and loved Nandini with all sincerity. His teacher’s unexplained rejection and then Nandini’s refusal to accept him- despite Vanraj, her husband, re-uniting them- in order to uphold the honour of her wedding vows makes our hearts go out to him!

Kashi Bai from Bajirao Mastani:

pc

Kashi Bai was a sweet, loving and devoted wife, firmly standing next to her husband Peshwa Bajirao Ballal. She was his closest ally and go-to person in times of distress. However, Bajirao, swayed by the beauty and courage of Princess Mastani, accepts her as his wife, causing deep hurt to Kashi. Despite the anguish and pain, she decides to take care of Mastani and stand up for her rights and dignity amid strong opposition from Bajirao’s family and the stakeholders of the Maratha confederacy. Now, that’s what we call unconditional love and sacrifice!  We know that Kashi's fate in the film is a depiction of what happened with real-life Kashi Bai, but we really feel sorry for both reel and real-life Kashi Bai.

Kalpana from Ghajini

kk

Kalpana’s tragic end, that too without knowing the reality of Sachin still haunts us. Life had always been unfair to her but she didn’t let that dim down her spark or spirits. She was a giver who would go out of her way to help those in need. The scene where she hands ‘Sachin’ the money for his mother’s supposed treatment after selling her beloved cars makes us realise the lengths she was willing to go to support her loved ones. Her story is incredibly poignant. A happy ending, even a bittersweet one, would have provided some solace!

Veronica from Cocktail:

dp

Veronica was kind and vibrant and lived life on her own terms. She loved those around her with all her heart and supported Meera, a complete stranger in her times of distress. However, when Meera and her boyfriend Gautam fall for each other, she steps aside, sacrificing her love for the sake of their happiness. It was indeed heartbreaking to see her end up alone after giving her all in love.

Aman from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai:

Aman KKHH

Aman was what Gen Z calls a walking talking green flag! He was a kind and supportive partner, who let her bride walk away when he realized her happiness lies with her best friend and not him. It was disappointing to see him lose out on love, even though he handled it with grace.

Jordan from Rockstar

JHYG

Jordan’s passion and rebellious attitude was captivating. His road to stardom was embroiled with hardships and losses. His story is that of self-discovery and even though he achieves what he had aimed for in life, that is, to become a rockstar, he loses out on the one thing he loved the most- her college muse Heer, thus proving the popular quote ‘no one does ever get a complete world for himself!'
