From complicated love triangles and iconic rivalries to memorable sagas of trust and loyalties, these films have resonated with a large number of audiences as they take them back to their good ol’days.
College is an interesting time when you navigate the complexities of young adulthood while also trying to make the most of the final carefree days of your life. You feel strongly, forge life-long friendships, and experience that tingling feeling of love for the first time!
Bollywood, too, has had a special love affair with college. From the golden era to the vibrant 90s and 2000s, storytellers have consistently returned to the corridors of academia to bring out beautiful tales of friendship, love and the angst that comes with growing up.
So, here’s a list of simple, fun and lighthearted films that illustrate the beauty of college romances!
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a story of two college best friends Rahul and Anjali and how they rediscover their bond years later after Rahul’s daughter reunites them, following the wish of her late mother. The protagonists’ classroom banters, teasing, basketball games and silly fights, resonate with a lot of people till date as it is soaked in nostalgia of college life and the love that may or may have not been reciprocated.
Student of the Year
Student of the Year is a story of friendship, rivalry and an iconic love triangle between three classmates Abhimanyu, Shanaya and Rohan. The three popular kids, who were once close, fiercely compete for the title of "Student of the Year" in their college after their relationship with each other turns bitter. The glamorous campus, Rohan’s swanky cars, Shanaya’s gorgeous outfits and Abhimanyu’s swag shown in the film are often accused of being an unrealistic portrayal of college life in India however, it doesn’t take away from the fact that this one is an out and out entertainer!
2 States
2 States is a beautiful rom-com about two people from different states who fall in love in college and then have a hard time convincing their conservative families for their marriage. Krish is from Delhi, while Ananya hails from Chennai and this romance between the ‘two states’ begins in the classrooms of IIM Ahmedabad when the two start studying together in their hostel rooms and college cafeteria. This love story resonated with a lot of couples who come from different cultural backgrounds and have interesting memories of how they convinced their respective families to accept their relationship. 2 States makes for a super fun watch as it is also a hilarious take on regular Indian families and how their cultural differences make them so unique!
Main Hoon Na
Main Hoon Na is a heartwarming film that celebrates the power of love over hate and the victory of good over evil. However, the film which is largely set in college also explores the themes of friendship, love, and heart-break. How many of you blushed when Major Ram Sharma, posing as a student flirted with his teacher, the stunning Miss Chandini? or could feel the pain in Sanju’s eyes when she saw Lucky flirting with other girls or describing her as a misfit to be his girlfriend before her makeover? The classroom fun, silly competitions and the dreamy prom night surely got us excited for our college life as kids, didn’t it?
Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na
This coming-of age romance about two best friends, Jai and Aditi and how their bond gradually blossoms in love beautifully encapsulates most of the college romances. The fun banters, deep midnight conversations, teasing but also comforting each other during their low phases was something a lot of college-going youngsters could relate to. Their undercurrent of love, which is evident in jealousy when the other person pursues someone else romantically and their eventual realization during their period of separation makes it one of the most fun and realistic portrayals of love. And who can forget the comfort of ‘Kabhi Kabhi Aditi’? The song beautifully set the tone of the story and gave a glimpse of Jai, Aditi and the gang's college life and camaraderie!
