In our movies, love and romance is based on unacknowledged fondness, innocent gazes, blushes or something as simple as mutual respect and admiration. These films ooze comfort and relatability and often show us what love could feel like.
What is love? This is a question that has lingered in the human mind since time unknown. The definition and dynamics of this emotion keeps evolving, or, should we say, keeps getting complex with each passing day. One might turn to art and cinema to find answers only to be lost in an avalanche of drama and pompousness. Bollywood, for example, is a place where love is expressed through grand gestures, cheesy dialogues and over the top declarations. However, there also exists a quieter, more nuanced and subtle nook.
This coming of age romance about two best friends, Jai and Aditi and how their bond gradually blossoms in love beautifully portrays their unacknowledged love for each other through small gestures, deep conversations, banter and comforting each other during low phases in their lives. Further, their evident jealousy and unsettledness when the other person pursues someone else romantically and their eventual realization during their period of separation makes it one of the most realistic portrayals of love and something that a large number of youngsters could resonate with.
The Lunchbox
Ila and Saajan, two lonely individuals who meet through a mistaken lunchbox delivery, are the protagonists of this unconventional romance story. Despite never having met in person, their relationship deepens as they correspond over letters in their lunch box. Through this exchange, the two gain understanding of each other's lives and find comfort and peace in it. The film's delicate portrayal of romance is endearing and heartwarming. It is a beautiful reminder that sometimes emotional ties may be just as powerful and moving as physical presence.
Piku
Piku is another example of a realistic and mature love story. Piku and Rana's bond gets stronger over a road trip to Kolkata where she is accompanied by his eccentric father. Their romance is depicted through tender looks, humor, and exchange of strong opinions on various matters of life. Both their personalities and the film's tone are mirrored in their romance. Piku is an epitome of how gentle and genuine connections give a beautiful meaning to life.
Masaan
In Masaan, Deepak and Shalu's romantic track is a sigh of relief amidst the dark themes and social complexities explored in the movie. Here, the duo bonds over their love for poetry, which displays a compatibility of minds and heart as they find happiness in each other's company. Their love is innocent, pure, and one that blooms into a serious commitment despite their social obstacles and personal tragedies.
Sita Ramam
Sita Ramam aesthetically captures the classic romance between Lieutenant Ram and Sita Mahalakshmi. Set in the 1960, against the background of war and political turmoil, the romance in the film is also based on shared value systems, mutual admiration and a deep understanding. Ram is captivated by Sita's fortitude, intelligence, and kindness. Sita, in turn, is drawn towards Ram for his bravery, compassion, and his strong commitment to his duty. The two protagonists also make great sacrifices for each other as Ram risks his life to protect Sita while Sita spends her entire life preserving Ram's memory and fulfilling his wishes.
Do Dooni Chaar
Do Dooni Chaar, despite being largely celebrated as a dramedy, also showcases a heartwarming and relatable subplot focusing on the romance between a middle-aged couple, Santosh and Kusum Duggal. Again, their love story is not about tall claims or cheesy actions but is rooted in their understanding and aspirations. Their family dreams of owning a car, which later becomes a matter of their pride and ego. The chaos that unfolds later and how the family, especially the sweet couple, navigates through it while providing each other with strong emotional support and encouragement is a treat to watch!
