Through her Instagram reel series, Nikita Gupta takes us inside the many wedding rituals that make Indian weddings so unique.
No matter how many weddings you’ve been to in India, it’s almost impossible to find two that look even remotely alike. The colours, fabrics, jewellery, rituals, and even the music change from one region to another. In one part of the country, a bride might be wrapped in a deep red Kanjeevaram, her hair tied with jasmine, while somewhere up north, another bride steps out in a heavily embroidered sharara passed down by her grandmother. Move west and you’ll find mirror-work lehengas, move east and you’ll see intricate handlooms in wedding attires . Every wedding element carries a sense of belonging and reflects where the bride comes from. That’s exactly what creator Nikita Gupta captures so beautifully in her ongoing series Band Baaja Bride Decoded, an exploration of how Indian brides dress up, carrying their heritage, community, and memories into one of the most important days of their lives.

Take a look:
If you ask anyone what they find most beautiful about weddings, you’ll hear all kinds of answers. Some will talk about the colours and music, others will mention a special custom or ritual from their region. That’s the thing about Indian weddings, they change with every place, every community, every belief. The way people pray, the words they speak, the gestures they repeat, everything holds a story that’s been passed down for years. It's interesting how these traditions continue to change, depending on where we live and how families bring their own meaning to them.
Nikita explores exactly this in one of her other series Saat Phere, Sau Parampara. She takes a closer look at the many wedding rituals across India, where they come from, why they matter, and what they tell us about the people who follow them. It’s more than just a shallow look at culture, it’s about understanding how faith, love, and family come together in small, meaningful ways. In every episode, even the simplest act feels like a reminder of how these age-old traditions continue to live on through people.
