Here's a look at the key conversations and highlights from this week online.

Social media this week was dominated by significant discussions and pop culture highlights across platforms.

Some conversations that caught our eye!

Grok was used to alter images of women, drawing global criticism

One of the most talked-about controversies on social media this week has been the “Grok bikini trend.” Users on X prompted AI chatbot, Grok, to digitally alter photos of women and in some cases minors, placing them in bikinis without consent. The trend caused outrage over digital sexual abuse, AI ethics, and content moderation failures. India’s government issued a notice to X demanding the removal of obscene content, a review of Grok’s safeguards, and a report on actions taken, warning of legal consequences. People on social media condemned this, pointing to serious risks to privacy and safety.

Joe Keery overtakes Taylor Swift with 2022 hit

Stranger Things and the end of its season were among the major talking points on social media this week. What also caught people’s attention online was Stranger Things star Joe Keery dethroning Taylor Swift to claim the No. 1 spot on Spotify with his track End of Beginning. Released in 2022, the song clocked 6.52 million plays on the platform, edging past Swift’s Fate of Ophelia, which recorded 6.21 million plays. The fact that many people didn’t even know Keery was the singer added another layer of discussion online.

Memes and trends

These drinks aren't even that strong

There’s a trend going around where people sit down to drink with someone, casually complaining about how the drinks don’t even feel that strong. Cut to the very next moment and you see them completely knocked out, passed out on the road or slumped somewhere random. It’s funny in a dark, familiar way, because almost everyone has either lived this exact experience or knows someone who has.

Virtual boyfriend trend

This AI-generated trend has taken over our feeds. Even though Valentine’s Day is still weeks away, people are already asking AI to imagine the kind of boyfriend that would fit them best. The results usually show up as cute, AI images, which users then share online. What keeps the trend going isn’t just the visuals, but how casually people are using AI to project their expectations of companionship, sometimes as a joke, sometimes not.

God I used to love this hair

People have been sharing their hair transformations as part of this trend. It points to how often we move through different personality phases, and how changing our hair becomes a marker of those shifts.
