Nepal’s first female PM chosen on Discord after deadly unrest

Unrest in Nepal made global headlines this month after protests against corruption and political instability left at least 72 people dead. What truly captured worldwide attention was the way the country’s next leader was chosen. In a move unprecedented for any democracy, thousands of young Nepalis gathered on Discord, a platform mostly known for gamers, to debate and vote on a consensus prime minister. After hours of heated discussion, they selected former Supreme Court Chief Justice Sushila Karki, who was sworn in the very next day. The act had the internet talking across the globe and made history, as Karki also became Nepal’s first female prime minister.
