TikTok isn’t officially back, yet. But the sudden reappearance of its website has already set off a flood of memes, throwbacks and jokes about a second chance at viral fame.
TikTok’s official website being accessible to several users across India has stirred up curiosity, with many wondering if the Chinese video-sharing giant is preparing for a return. For context, the app was banned back in June 2020, along with 58 other Chinese applications, after the Government of India cited security concerns and issues related to sovereignty and public order. While officials have clarified that no formal order has been issued to lift the ban and the app itself remains unavailable on app stores, the sudden reappearance of TikTok online has been enough to make people talk about it again.
Some users have jokingly called this a “second chance” to finally become TikTok stars, something they missed out on before the 2020 ban. Social media is already filling up with memes and humorous throwbacks, with people imitating the old TikTok trends that once dominated the internet and poking fun at themselves for being late the first time around. It feels like a mix of nostalgia and anticipation, with some waiting for an official update on the app’s status and others already getting ready to rehearse their dances and lip-syncs as if a return is just around the corner.
