Here’s a quick look at what people have been talking about on social media this week.

Last week had the internet talking about everything from viral moments to unexpected trends. Here’s a quick roundup of what everyone was sharing, debating, and reacting to online.

Conversations:

Zohran Mamdani makes history as New York City’s first muslim and south Asian mayor

Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist of Indian-Ugandan descent, made history by winning New York City’s mayoral race on November 4, 2025. He defeated Andrew Cuomo, becoming the city’s first Muslim, South Asian, and youngest mayor in more than a century, with a record turnout of 2 million votes.

In his victory speech, Mamdani opened with Nehru’s “a moment comes, but rarely in history” line from Tryst with Destiny, drawing a parallel between India’s independence and a new era for New York. As he wrapped up, “Dhoom Machale” played, and social media hasn’t stopped talking about it since.

Miss Universe Thailand director apologizes after remarks about Miss Mexico cause uproar

The 74th Miss Universe pageant has stirred up major controversy after Miss Mexico, Fatima Bosch, was insulted by Nawat Itsaragrisil, the director of Miss Universe Thailand, during a pre-pageant event. Several contestants, including the reigning Miss Universe, walked out in protest to show their support for Bosch.

Social media has since erupted with conversations about respect, representation, and professionalism within global pageants. While Itsaragrisil has since issued an apology, the internet isn’t ready to move on just yet, with many calling the contestants’ stand a reminder that grace and solidarity matter more than crowns.

Memes and trends:

Fake Apologies

Are you wondering why your feeds are suddenly full of brands apologizing? India seems to be in the middle of an “apology era".  In the past few weeks, major brands like Skoda, T-Series, Haldiram’s, Reliance Digital, Adani Ambuja Cement, and even chef Ranveer Brar have all posted apology letters. But they aren’t apologising for any controversy or mistake. They’re saying sorry for being too good. The trend features brands sharing mock corporate letters that look like official apologies.  The tone is playful and self-aware, with companies pretending to “regret” how much customers enjoy their products.

Boyfriend

Another cool trend that brands are jumping on right now revolves around Karan Aujla’s latest track, Boyfriend. Ever since the song dropped, brands have been quick to join the hype, remixing clips and creating their own playful versions of the video.

You're not nerd enough to understand

We all want to live our favorite fiction stories. So there is a trend where people are referencing their favorite fiction stories, especially emphasizing the sacrifices and something the lover does for the other one, and then adding “but you’re not Nerd enough to understand,” implying that the person they want to do it for doesn’t understand the reference.
