For today's Friday Follow, we talk to Reshma Mariam John about her influencer journey and what led her to it.
It's never too late to start something new, experiment, and try your luck in it without giving in to the fear of failing. If there's anything that the last two years have taught us it's that life is unpredictable and you can always find surprises when you're not looking. Getting into the world of content creation, and sharing her love for dressing up with a few followers was the surprise that Reshma Mariam John was not expecting. But the love that she received from them opened her mind to try out the world of content creation.
Born and brought up in Muscat, Oman Reshma is a lawyer by profession who became a content creator out of her sheer love for fashion. Also a passionate dancer, she has her own firm in Cochin, Kerala. For someone who loves dressing up and taking pictures, joining the creator community might have come naturally. "It was during lockdown I started posting more pictures and more dance videos. All thanks to the lockdown, I found a hidden interest in myself." This interest in fashion or decking up can be attributed to her home of three girls. Having sisters who equally loved raiding mom's closet and mismatching different outfits was her first introduction to fashion. She says, "Growing up with girls around you makes you a fashionista." She just found her interest at some point and that became prominent during the lockdown.
Not missing out on the opportunity of love that she began getting from people, she tried to put a lot more effort into planning what she shares online. "Once I started posting photos and videos, my posts began to get noticed and that was a huge motivation for me to do more." She credits most of it to short video platforms as well. She believes that these platforms have helped small content creators like her grow. "The support these platforms provide is beyond measure. I am so grateful for such platforms and for helping me grow my passion."
While she has just started off as a fashion influencer, she confessed to not being very open to experimenting with fashion as of now. She likes to stay in her comfort zone and share them with the confidence that people will welcome her with open arms. Her not experimenting with her own style does not mean she ignores the people who do. "I am so much in awe when I see people experimenting and trying out new things and it does inspire me to come out of my shell too."
Even though she did not name any, she talked about how much she appreciated each creator she follows and looks up to. "The amount of hard work and dedication they put into creating content for their audience is actually something I learn from them."
Since you started creating videos, what according to you are the best and worst parts of content creation?
If you enjoy what you do, I would say that's the best part of it. Every coin has two sides. Similarly, we can't do content that everyone in the world equally enjoys. For every content you post, there will be someone who won't like it. There will be negative comments and DMs. Just take the good in things and move on and upward.
Who are the people that you look up to find inspiration?
I follow a lot of Bollywood and South Indian influencers. Their efforts to create content are what I appreciate and look up to.

Have you received any DM from your followers that stayed with you?
Every single message I receive from my followers is precious. It brings me great joy to read their messages. They are my motivation to do more content.
If you had to describe your hopes for 2022?
2022 has so far been a kind year. I have been able to grow my social media community. I was able to create good content for my followers. Planning to do better and more in 2023.
