Harnaaz Sandhu crowned as the Miss Universe 2021; India won the title after 21 years

Chandigarh based actor/model Harnaaz Sandhu won the title of Miss Universe 2021 bringing the crown home after 21 years.

After 21 years of winning the title, India was crowned at the global platform as Punjab-based Harnaaz Sandhu was declared the winner at the 70th Miss Universe 2021. The pageant took place on Sunday night in Eliat, Israel saw Harnaaz win for India. Paraguay's Nadia Ferreira and South Africa's Lalela Mswane were her close competitors till the end. The 21-year-old Chandigarh-based actor brought back the crown after Lara Dutta won it in 2000. She started modeling at a young age eventually becoming part of various beauty pageants. She won her first pageant in 2017 when she was crowned as Miss Chandigarh at year.

Harnaaz has mentioned that she takes her inspiration from her mother who is a gynecologist by profession. Following her footsteps, she has been actively working in various health camps addressing women’s health and menstrual hygiene. She is also a strong advocate for women’s empowerment, particularly their constitutional rights to education, careers, and freedom of choice. She also finds her inspiration from Miss World 2000, Priyanka Chopra, and that she follows her body of work.

The final question that won her the crown was, "What advice would you give to young women watching on how to deal with the pressures they face today?" to which she replied, "Well, I think the biggest pressure the youth of today is facing is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique and that's what makes you beautiful, stop comparing yourselves with others, and let's talk about more important things that are happening worldwide. I think this is what you need to understand. Come out, speak for yourself, because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own . I believe in myself and that's why I'm standing here today. Thank you."
