House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon starring Matt Smith released it's first episode on Disney+Hotstar and there has been an outpour of reviews for the show!

House of the Dragon which released its first episode this Monday, brought back a rush of Game of Thrones nostalgia for all the fans. Even though the last season of the show was not very well received in 2019, the hit HBO series still holds a lot of significance when it comes to setting benchmarks in good storytelling, cinematography, background music, and acting. Carrying forward this tradition, House of the Dragon, also feels like it has great potential and a story that'll keep as hooked as its ancestral show. Based on the novels, A Song of Ice and Fire written by George R. R. Martin, the story is based on the part, Fire & Blood which portrays the beginning of the end of House Targaryen. The series is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. The events shown in the series cover the Targaryen war of succession, also known as 'Dance of the Dragons'.

Directed by Miguel Sapochnik, the first episode begins with King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) being chosen as the heir to his grandfather, Jaehaerys I Targaryen as he is his only male heir. We fast forward ten years into his reign and see that he too, just like is grandfather, longs for a male heir who can be his successor someday, but even after five difficult pregnancies, the only surviving child that the king and his Queen Aemma Arryn (Sian Brooke) have is Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock), a fierce girl who loves her dragons and desires to serve as queen someday, only if her father looked beyond gender. After really gruesome childbirth that leads to her mother's and the King's only male heir's death, the King has no choice but to turn to his only living kin to take over the Iron Throne someday. But she has another contender for the throne, her uncle, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), who is violent, merciless to his people, and has no remorse. Who really will end up on the Iron Throne out of the two is what we'll get to see in future episodes.
