Into the art, aesthetics and expertise of mini vlogs

As our attention span is lessening, mini vlogs are spreading like wildfire on social media to creatively grab the attention of viewers.

Some people can watch 3-hour movies or read 5000 pages-long books. However, let's be real! Most of us have the attention span of a goldfish. Internet and most importantly, social media have condensed our attention span. After all, when things are available at the flick of a wrist, you become less patient. Well, the world will just have to adjust, right? One such social media trend catering to the audience's preferences is 'mini vlogs'.

When vlogs that we love binging on started feeling longer, social media users got innovative and came up with 'mini vlogs'. For the uninitiated, vlogs are short videos uploaded on social media that capture an activity, a day, or a concept in general. Mini vlogs are even shorter; approximately around a minute long. Nowadays, they're all the rage on various social media platforms, especially Instagram. Recently, Instagram has become home to quirky and creative mini vlogs as content creators are using them to connect with their audience.

No matter whether you're putting up content about fashion, sports, academia, or simply a glimpse of your day, a mini vlog is a cool and quick way of putting your content out there.

Here are a few mini vlogs to get you started!

How does one make a mini vlog though? We reached out to digital creators, Ritvi Shah, Mithi Mishra, and Umang Panchal who helped us understand the process!

Have you made mini vlogs? What has your experience been like?

Ritvi mentioned that mini vlogs are fun to make and watch. She loves how they cover your experience of an entire day/ trip in a few seconds. Mithi feels that they're the best way to showcase any experience. Umang, whose Instagram profile displays a variety of mini vlogs, says that he studied how to make them a few months ago. His journey began with capturing such vlogs during vacations or trips. "I never worry about the end product. I shoot everything from morning to evening, take the best parts and combine them". To make his mini vlogs innovative and unique, he adds "honest subtitles". "I still can't believe I started a trend of adding subtitles to mini vlogs."

What's an ideal length of a mini vlog?

Ritvi recommends making mini vlogs of 15-30 seconds at best. Mithi, too, advises keeping the duration under a minute. "For me, it's under 50 seconds," says Umang. If one has a lot of clips, he believes 40 seconds are enough. He suggests that it won't get much attention unless one matches the music with the clips in the mini vlog. In such a case, adding subtitles can help.

How do you maintain the aesthetics?

"Honestly, I don't," says Ritvi. "My only concern is that it should include elements that I genuinely look forward to i.e a bit of art, glimpses of doggos, and super vibrant color palettes." Meanwhile, Mithi mentions that she maintains the aesthetics by understanding the soul of the vlog and uniformly maintaining it. She believes that the theme should be clear. Umang advises, "You don't necessarily have to go to expensive cafés or places to make your mini vlog aesthetic unless it's a part of your lifestyle. Just try shooting it from various angles, and find a unique perspective." He also recommends capturing a place or activity in accordance with its theme and vibe.

What are some of the points that we should keep in mind while making a mini vlog?

Ritvi advises that even though it includes mere seconds of your day, it should tell a story. She also advises avoiding repetitive scenes and selfie videos. "Maintain the essence. Do not try to put everything in one vlog," says Mithi. Understand the spirit of the place or whatever you are showcasing. Keep it short and crisp," she adds. Umang believes in keeping movement in your video. "Don't use still photos. Moving away from or towards your subject, rotating your hand, capturing something in a pan-angle are the kind of things that make your mini vlogs dynamic." He further shares an example saying, "If a car is in an aesthetic place and you simply put its shot for a few seconds, it gets boring. However, if you capture the same vehicle by moving around it from different angles, it becomes interesting." He also advises shooting all the details, each at least 10 seconds long.

What do you think is making mini vlogs so popular?

Ritvi believes that people's reduced attention span is the prime reason for mini vlogs' popularity. Mithi echoes similar sentiments when she says, "People these days have a short attention span. They want quick information. That’s the reason mini vlogs have become so popular." Umang comments, "People now prefer short-form content. I have noticed that people love seeing and exploring other people's lifestyles. Also, if you're not a 'daily-diary' kind of person, then these vlogs can come to your aid. And it's fun!"

Do you think that the trend of mini vlogs is going to stay for a long time?

"Yes. They are here to stay," says Ritvi. Mithi, too, is sure. "Considering the amount of love people are showing, it will be a trend for the longest time," she says. Umang too agrees that the trend will go on for a long time. He's of the opinion that people will keep adding innovative aspects to mini vlogs keeping them popular in the near future.
