ANI controversy

Amidst the recent copyright controversy, ANI sues YouTuber Mohak Mangal for defamation, while PTI launches affordable content access to support creators.

In a significant development in the ongoing dispute between Asian News International (ANI) and YouTuber Mohak Mangal, ANI has filed a defamation suit in the Delhi High Court. The lawsuit, submitted on May 28, 2025, accuses Mangal of making false and damaging allegations in a viral video that claims ANI engaged in extortion and copyright abuse. The case is scheduled for a hearing on May 29, 2025. Alongside Mangal, the suit also names comedian Kunal Kamra and Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair as defendants, alleging that they amplified Mangal’s claims by sharing the video. ANI claims that the video aims to undermine the credibility of the news agency and damage the reputation of its trademarked services. In its petition, the agency notes that Mangal acknowledged using ANI’s copyrighted footage to monetize his content but still released a video it describes as defamatory.

The agency alleges that the video spreads false information, negatively impacts public perception of its services, and misuses its trademarks through misleading commentary. This legal action has further fueled the ongoing conversation around copyright laws, fair use, and the shifting power structures between legacy media organizations and India’s growing community of digital creators.

Amid the controversy, the Press Trust of India (PTI) has positioned itself as a more creator-friendly alternative.

On May 27, 2025, PTI announced that it would offer “highly affordable” access to its video content for individual YouTube creators and social media users. The agency highlighted its commitment to “credible journalism and ethical business practices,” aiming to support “responsible content creation.” Although PTI has not yet revealed exact pricing, the announcement is widely seen as a strategic response to the backlash surrounding ANI’s copyright enforcement tactics.
