Starring Taapsee Pannu and Kani Kusruti, Assi has impressed the janta for its gritty realism, stellar performances and hard-hitting presentation.
Anubhav Sinha's courtroom drama, Assi, starring Taapsee Pannu, arrived in theatres last week. The title, referring to the number of rapes taking place everyday in India, explores the plight of victims in and outside the courtroom for justice while reflecting on the deep-rooted rape culture, apathy of institutions, and the human cost such cases bear in society. The film follows Raavi (Pannu) 's quest to bring justice to Parima’s (Kani Kusruti) offenders and has been receiving positive reviews from critics.
The Janta has been echoing this sentiment, with many unanimously opining that the film is hard-hitting, grounded and an urgent watch. While some found the film disturbing in nature, most are largely in awe of the performances, gritty narration, and sharp commentary on systematic and societal corruption!
Here’s what the Janta is saying about the film!
Difficult watch but Assi is a film to support and champion. The misogyny and rape culture around us takes multiple forms and each form is dangerous. An urgent reminder.

Kudos to the team for attempting a film on this subject! pic.twitter.com/8QaLRo97kF
Taapsee Pannu & Anubhav Sinha combo cooked again with #Assi. Powerful film highlighting the messed up realities of our country, which makes for an unsettling watch but very important & relevant for current times. Red screen showing up every 20 minutes was a smart & bold choice. pic.twitter.com/L1AwUEnpJk

Waah re parvarish 👏
Phir expect karte ho ki baccha responsible bane?
This is exactly what’s wrong with society accountability ZERO!#Assi dikhaati hai asli problem. pic.twitter.com/9tEPyG5nWf

#Assi is dark, disturbing and often uncomfortable but a very very important film. Thanks @anubhavsinha for making this. The cast is top notch but #KaniKusruti and #AdvikJaiswal steal the show. Not a usual entertainer but it’s deeply engaging and worth a watch! pic.twitter.com/OHqXkqc57o

Courtroom mein jab lawyer poochti hai “bachche ko kyun laye?” aur baap bolta hai “yeh bachcha nahi, mera beta ab bada ho chuka hai” #ASSI ne ek line mein poora trauma phaad ke rakh diya. Yeh scene dard nahi, system pe charge sheet hai. pic.twitter.com/hP0EXbqH3l
#Assi - One scene in Anubhav Sinha’s latest sociopolitical drama left me emotionally unsettled. It arrives when rape survivor Parima (a fantastic Kani Kusruti) learns that one of her assaulters has been killed. She tells her husband Vinay (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, beautifully… pic.twitter.com/zWthJywF59

Brilliantly made, strongly performed, aur emotionally heavy film. 💯🙌🏻#ASSI yeh dikhati hai ki problem sirf crime nahi,

problem woh system aur silence hai, joh use normal bana deta hai.
A PERFECT WATCH to understand what’s going wrong with us as a society.#ASSIReviewpic.twitter.com/hb0UlEoXN3
Watched #Assi today. Good to see film makers not run after box office, and instead display the art of story telling.

The entire run time of 2 hours and 14 minutes feels as if you are part of the court room drama.
Nothing feels artificial. There is nothing which screams… pic.twitter.com/Mfbz9s3lpC
