Vishal Furia's latest horror outing Maa starring Kajol has the Janta divided over its story and VFX, however, the seasoned actress' performance is being largely lauded.
Vishal Furia’s mythological horror Maa, starring Kajol and Ronit Roy released on Friday and opened to underwhelming reviews by the critics. The film, which is a part of Ajay Devgn and Jio Studio’s ‘Shaitaan’ universe, explores the story of a mother who defies the demonic forces of an ancestral village to protect her girl child. Despite the film failing to impress critics, the Janta has mixed feelings regarding it.
While some are in awe of Kajol’s performance as the titular character, other's are divided over the VFX and screeplay of the film. However, most of them are imprssed by the climax and the way it celebrates the strength of a woman, especially a woman.
Here's what else the Janta had to say!
My #Maa review ❤️ @itsKajolD has always been a step (many steps) above anyone else I have ever watched. When I think she can't impress me anymore, she goes and does just that. Bravo ❤️ @ajaydevgn @ADFFilms @jiostudios pic.twitter.com/Pw6NrbFWWo

#MAA is a mythological horror film which was mostly undetailed and illogical... Plot was decent(fairytale fantasy) , but execution falters ... Bgm was good... Movie has lots of VFX shots which were actually good and clear... Cast did well...But overall, it is neither good as… https://t.co/nkbUVpRr3s pic.twitter.com/gQijHPvmAn

#Maa was a bit of a slog. The concept had potential; drawing from mythology, folklore, and religion but the execution just didn’t land. The VFX/CGI were painfully bad. And that Kali Puja sequence at the end? Felt far from authentic. Hindi films seriously need better writers.

Kajol's acting in the climax &any scenes was truly outstanding!
I really liked the vfx & BGM.
A few scenes truly scared me.
Ronit Roy was amazing!#Maa should definitely be watched on the Big Screen but there it's truly fun!
No dull moments in the film.
#Maa had a great folklore but the screenplay is just about alright.

The main culprit here is the making, production design and VFX are too bad, which take the feel away.
Performances are alright and the sound mix is really good.I was never bored though!!!
2.5/5#MaaTheFilm
#Maa fails to deliver as a horror film. The story is weighed down by scenes that lack shock value, and the performances are forgettable. Worse still, the emotions fall flat, leaving no real impact. A project that plays out like a poor mishmash of far better films in the genre.

#MaaTheFilm is strictly average and can be skipped.

Kajol's acting is okayish, but the story feels half baked and unconvincing. pic.twitter.com/Szf98vlZoQ

A dark, mythological thriller powered by Kajol’s raw & emotional performance.
Tense mood, top-notch visuals, and a climax that hits both heart & soul.
Not perfect, but deeply powerful.#MaaReview #Kajol #MaaTheFilm

What could’ve been a technically sound Mytho-Horror got completely ruined by slow & dead screenplay. There are 0 exciting moment in the film. Emotions also doesn’t land well. Only good thing is visuals at places & few sequences in pre-climax. #MaaTheFilm is a miss. pic.twitter.com/a2qPFR3vlP
