Cannes 2024 Day 1 highlights

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival has opened, and as per the customary opening ceremony rituals, here's what happened on day 1 of the festival!

The much-anticipated Cannes Film Festival is back with a bang! And despite the dicey, dampening weather, the red carpet unfurled to welcome guests and celebs gracefully walked the infamous stairs of the red carpet. This year will mark the 77th year of the film festival since its inception and after almost 30 years, an Indian film, Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light, has entered the main competition section of the festival this year.

As witnessed every year, the opening ceremony saw the introduction of the festival's jury as they walked the red carpet. This year's honorary Palm d'Or was handed to Meryl Streep. The film 'Second Act' had its premiere. Jane Fonda, Juliette Binoche, Heidi Klum, and others also graced the red carpet.

Here's what happened on Day 1!

Greta Gerwig's Jury

The festival's jury was introduced by the master of the ceremony, Camille Cottin. It was presided over by Greta Gerwig, making her the first American female filmmaker to serve as president of the Cannes jury that comprises of Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Turkish photographer, actor, screenwriter Ebru Ceylan (2014 Palm d'Or winner), French actress Eva Green and actor Omar Sy, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona (Society of the Snow), Lebanese director and screenwriter Nadine Labaki (Capernaum), and Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda (2018 Palm d'Or winner). Greta was called 'the ideal director' for Cannes, given her work across arthouse and studio films and her interest in cinema history by Thierry Fremaux, Cannes' artistic director.

Honorary Palm d'Or to Meryl Streep

Last year, Tom Cruise was given the Honorary award for his contribution to cinema and keeping in line with this tradition, this year's Honorary Palm d'Or was awarded to Meryl Streep, who, in her own style, accepted the award from the French actress Juliette Binoche as the crowd roared in a thunderous applaud. An overwhelmed Meryl thanked everyone for the honor and was heard saying, “I'm just so grateful that you haven't gotten sick of my face and you haven’t gotten off of the train,”.

Jane Fonda, Heidi Klum, Messi, Anatomy of a Fall dog on the red carpet

Jane Fonda, German model Heidi Klum, Messi, the famous dog from Anatomy of a Fall, and many others were seen gracing the red carpet with their fashionable looks. Celebs were there to attend the opening ceremony and the screening of the film Second Act.

The film Second Act opened the festival with its premiere

The film festival opened with the premiere Second Act by Quentin Dupieux. It stars Léa Seydoux, Louis Garrel, Vincent Lindon, and Raphaël Quenard in a talkative comedy about the making of the first movie directed by AI. The film received a mellow 3.5 minute standing ovation with applause.

Zaho de Sagazan's performance

French singer-songwriter Zaho de Sagazan performed David Bowie's 'Modern Love' at Cannes 2024.
