Conrad doesn’t know it yet but he comes from Bollywood’s school of yearning and we desi girls love looking at him through the lens of a Hindi love song!

The soundtrack for The Summer I Turned Pretty is a character in itself. Since season 1, the songs used in the show have been some of the most iconic tracks in pop culture. But they are not just used to get the Gen Z’s on board, the songs played in the show have way more meaning than you know! They work as a metaphor for what the characters, especially the lead aka Belly, is feeling in that moment. While artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Harry Styles, Ariana Grande and Billie Eiliesh’s work has been featured throughout the three seasons, the soundtrack heavily relies on Taylor Swift music. From ‘That’s the Way I Loved You’ being played at the debutant ball scene between Belly and Conrad, to False God having us on a chokehold in the bathtub scene in season 3, Taylor Swift’s lyrics serve as a way of Belly finding her way back to her feelings one episode at a time. And if you’re not a swiftie, this show is bound to make you one! It has definitely taught me how using the right song at the right time can change the entire game for a story. I am way more invested in this love triangle than I should be and sometimes it's all because of the songs!

While I love a good Taylor Swift moment on the show, what I love even more is doom scrolling through Bonrad (Belly+Conrad) edits on Instagram on Hindi songs I haven’t listened to since eons! Because just like Ms. Swift’s music, Hindi love songs also tend to describe love in a deeper emotional sense. There’s just something about Belly and Conrad gazing deeply into each other’s eyes with Mohit Chauhan’sTum Ho or Dooriyan playing in the background. That 30 second Reel would probably make me sob more than a one hour episode would! And there’s just no end to it! One would think that after a point we’d get bored of it and then a new edit pops up. Finding a limit to this is like finding a limit to the ocean. What impresses me is not just the edit overall but the fact that someone’s tried to make it look way more creative than it probably does on the show! Yearning and love triangles have both been a major part of Hindi cinema since the dawn of time and hence we desi girls just feel like Conrad is one of our own.

We see him as Aditya from Jab We Met, Nikhil from Hasee Toh Phasee, Veer from Love Aaj Kal, Aman from Kal Ho Naa Ho - honestly the list goes on! We can’t tell Chris Brighney that he feels like a Hindi film hero but we sure can make a banger edit of him on Ishq Waala Love or Samjhawaan! These songs are so hard hitting we watch these Reels on loop, it’s almost embarrassing! I have an entire saved folder for just these Bonrad edits and I know I’m not the only one! These edits secretly make me hope for a Hindi song to pop up in one of the actual episodes but maybe that’s just me asking for too much! Maybe it’s the fact that I am watching Bonrad scenes be set in a song of a language I have grown up speaking and hence it hits so close to home. Whatever the reason might be, I know these Reels aren’t going away anytime soon and probably would be something I re-visit whenever I miss the show, given that it’s ending next week!
