Ponies

By centering overlooked women navigating loss, ambition and friendship, Ponies reflects the evolving realities of modern womanhood!

Ponies which is short for ‘Person of No Interest’ is a thriller comedy set in 1970s Russia during the cold war. In the middle of it all we have Bea(Emilia Clarke) and Twila(Haley Lu Richardson) whose husbands work for the CIA. But when they die under mysterious circumstances, the two women take their places as spies to not only help their country but also seek answers for themselves. The series is centered around a powerful story carried by these two women through and through. It’s definitely a tale we haven’t seen before and has garnered attention especially from women for how seamlessly the story blends in a good amount of drama, action, thriller and comedy through the lens of these protagonists. Even though the series is set years ago from now, the way their characters are treated and a lot of the sub-plots still remain relevant for a plethora of reasons even today!

Here’s why!

These are two women reclaiming agency after feeling like they’ve had no say in anything so far

The story begins with Bea and Twila losing their husbands in mysterious circumstances and choosing to seek answers instead of remaining passive victims. Their decision to join espionage operations reflects a powerful narrative of women reclaiming control over their lives after loss. Instead of having no say over their lives and letting the CIA decide for them, the two women take control over things themselves and refuse to be looked at as mere props who can be dictated to whenever and wherever. Women today relate to stories where leading ladies rewrite their narratives instead of being defined by grief or circumstance.

The power of being underestimated

The title refers to ‘Ponies’- Persons of No Interest. Women who are assumed to be invisible in the intelligence world. Ironically, their perceived insignificance becomes their greatest strength in espionage. Many women today relate to the idea of being underestimated in professional or social spaces, turning that invisibility into power, and showing the world what they’re truly made of!

Female friendship is at the heart of the narrative

Unlike many spy thrillers dominated by male leads, Ponies centres on the emotional and strategic partnership between Bea and Twila. Their friendship evolves through grief, danger, disagreements, and trust, which becomes something that’s super relatable in an era where best friends are the new boyfriends!

Both of them are layered and complex protagonists

Bea and Twila are not perfect heroes. One is intellectual and reserved, while the other is bold and impulsive. Their contrasting personalities add emotional depth rather than making them feel one-dimensional. The idea of the ‘perfect woman’ who has no flaws is no longer one women today accept. We’re imperfect, and we loudly embrace our flaws and let life on-screen replicate that as well!

Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson break stereotypes in a male-dominated genre

Espionage dramas have historically centred on male spies like James Bond or Jason Bourne. Ponies flips this by placing women, originally secretaries, at the centre of a Cold War conspiracy. The series challenges the idea that women belong in supportive roles and instead positions them as strategists, investigators, and operatives, which is rarely seen in the spy genre.

The duo proves that women, in fact, can be funny!

These two are no damsels in distress and definitely women who know how to land a joke. They not only add to the show's edge-of-the-seat moments but also strike a balance between keeping things lighthearted and not letting it get too intense for us as audiences! Maybe their humour is exactly why the series pulled so many women who were on the same page about everything these women feel!
