Thoughts I had while watching Interstellar for the first time!

Interstellar re-released over the weekend for its 10 year anniversary, but here’s every thought that I had as someone who watched the film for the first time!

Directed by Academy Award winner Christopher Nolan, Interstellar is a science fiction film that was released back in 2014. In honour of the film’s 10-year anniversary, the makers decided to re-release it worldwide. This just perfectly fits the current wave of re-releases that’s going on in India. So it goes without saying that avid movie watchers and fans showed up in huge numbers to watch the iconic story unfold once again. And then there were people like me who were given another chance to redeem themselves and watch this movie the way it was actually meant to be on the big screen! The film revolves around Cooper, who meets a group of astronauts, and together, they travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for mankind. It stars Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway in the leads. A film so beautifully layered and a background score that elevates the entire film, of course had to ignite thoughts in me and make me realise why the film is considered to be so legendary!

Here’s everything that went through my mind while watching the magnum opus!

The movie looks magnificent in IMAX

Interstellar is THE movie to watch in IMAX. There were so many moments when the entire theatre was sitting in pin-drop silence and was just in awe of the beauty that Nolan had created on-screen. It felt as if I was also in space along with Dr. Brand and Cooper, and the wide-eyed, filmy kid in me was so happy to be able to witness Nolan’s epic saga! 

While it was made a decade ago, it still stays pretty relevant 

Interstellar is set in a dystopian future where Earth has become inhabitable because of dust and bad air quality, which is relevant even today as a lot of places on our planet suffer from severe pollution. In search of a more habitable planet, Dr. Brand and Cooper go on a dangerous hunt in space. While it’s an interesting film, it also feels scary to be what could be our future if we don’t take care of our planet!

This is probably the only Christopher Nolan film I’ll ever understand in one go

Nolan’s films are heavily based on science, and that is one subject that always goes above my head. I wasn’t a big fan of Oppenheimer even though it was one of the most talked about films of 2023. So, while I was on the fence about this one, I am glad that because the story was fictional, it helped me understand the crux of it better. I felt I was one of Nolan’s intellectual audiences for once!

The feeling of watching a Christopher Nolan film in a housefull theatre is unparalleled

I planned on booking my tickets five days in advance, which I thought would be a good enough time to grab the best seats. But much to my surprise, Nolan’s loyal fan base in India beat me to it. There were shows going houseful back to back, and watching a film in a houseful theatre today has become a rare sight that I enjoy! Interstellar has earned the maximum amount of revenue from India with its re-release, and I am not the least bit surprised, given that we are a country known to love science and math!

There really couldn’t be better leads than Mathew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway for this film

There really isn’t a Matthew McConaughey or an Anne Hathaway rom-com that I haven’t watched! I’m a firm believer that the two of them have impeccable screen presence and charm on-screen. Both of them played their characters here with such conviction that it not only made me root for them, but I cried, laughed and looked at the entire story from their POV!

Finally, 10 years later, I understood what the hype was all about!

I was one of the very few people who lived under a rock and did not know much about Interstellar until recently. But every time someone mentioned the film IRL or on social media, they just couldn’t stop singing praises about it. From memes to in-depth conversations, the film went on to become a cult classic, and now that I have finally watched it, I can affirm that I understand where all the love for this movie comes from! It sure is a prime example of how a good movie will always garner love from the audience and critics alike!
