From unnatural conversations that refuse to land to becoming a part of controversies, Kajol and Twinkle Khanna’s ‘Two Much’ just does not sit right on so many levels!
When you hear that Kajol and Twinkle Khanna, two of the smartest, sassiest and straight forward women in the industry, who’ve made a name for themselves, are hosting a show together, we were all eyes and ears for it! What felt like was going to be another Koffee with Karan (possibly even better) that will bring us scandalous conversations and become our guilty pleasure every week, quickly turned into a huge disappointment from the first episode itself! But there’s not one, but a plethora of reasons behind why the show has come into the limelight for all the wrong reasons possible!
Unstructured conversations
The entire flow of the episode feels like random things are happening at the same time! One moment we see guests trying vada pav and the next they’re talking about their traumatic past and it ends with a game that only ends up giving you second hand embarrassment at how awkward it all is! It goes from 0 to 100 and not in a good way! In a lot of the episodes, it felt like it’s the guests doing the heavy lifting and not the hosts. Both Kajol and Twinkle Khanna feel like they don’t know how to steer the ship ahead so they just start a sentence and see where it leads them!

Daunting questions
From asking Alia Bhatt if she was ever worried about droopy breasts to asking Govinda about feminism, our hosts have got it all wrong! The sad part here is that the women are mainly asked about their marriage and if they are mothers then unsolicited advice on motherhood is thrown upon them! But that’s not the case for any of the male guests on the show! While they are asked about their personal life too, there’s a good balance of questions between that and the body of work that they’ve done. It’s more disappointing coming from the hosts of all people because as an actress and an established writer, I’m sure they’ve had to succumb to such questions over their own work and hated it as well. You’d expect some introspection on the questions in that case, but no.

Super sad guest list!
For a show hosted by women, you’d think many women, not just the ones who are in front of the camera, but ones who work behind the scenes and those who work in other career fields, could have possibly made it to the show and finally been given some screen time that they deserve. But what a huge let down it was to see the men take center stage here as well! From Salman- Aamir to Akshay- Saif and even Chunky Panday and Govinda, it was all about the heroes saving the day here as well, as compared to the female guests who were either paired with a man or just not given the due respect they deserve! What a lost opportunity!

Controversies
There’s a fine line between being straight forward and letting your intrusive thoughts out loud! Just when the show was being criticized for its lack of entertainment and not being up to the mark, one episode in particular sparked a lot of debate on social media. In episode five, featuring Janhvi Kapoor and Karan Johar, the duo was asked to play a game with the hosts where if they agree to something they stand in a green box and if not then they stand in the red one. The question that blew up on the internet was the one where Kajol, Twinkle Khanna and Karan Johar were seen defending physical infidelity over emotional, and Janhvi Kapoor was the only one who made some sense there. Not only did they normalize cheating, they also questioned Janhvi Kapoor for not doing so which felt like gaslighting!
The clip became a topic of discussion not only because it discussed cheating but mainly because it was shocking, hearing it out loud from women we thought were progressive. Over the years, we’ve come a long way, especially as women, to unlearn things that were fed to us and it’s sad to see that being asked to be okay with cheating to asking someone what it’s like to have a child as opposed to their work is something that’s coming from hosts who have faced similar things their entire lives! Not to forget, how Kajol also said that celebrities work harder than a 9-5 employee which was again, not taken well on social media and she was heavily criticized for not being able to overlook her privilege!

Don’t get me wrong, nobody dislikes celebrity gossip being fed to us on a platter but ‘Two Much’ was too much of regressive thoughts instead of frovilous stuff that we can discuss with our friends. Koffee with Karan falls on similar lines as a talk show but the difference here is that Karan Johar lets his guests fall into the trap we all want them to and gives us what we want. Not to forget, he had the guts to do all of that on national television at one point with a lot of finesse and pizzazz! There were conversations but there was a script! Kajol and Twinkle Khanna not only can’t stop talking about themselves, but also don’t let their guests open up the way they should!
Two Much, sadly and ultimately, has become an example of what it looks like when an OTT platform is just trying to check boxes without much thought put into it. The only one losing here is unfortunately the audiences who went in with sky high expectations but came out of it wanting their time back!
