A powerful earthquake of 7.4 magnitudes centred on Oaxaca, Mexico kills 6. Tsunami warning issued
A powerful earthquake shook Oaxaca, a city in Mexico on 23rd June 2020. The earthquake resulted in the death of six people and damage to buildings, roads and other properties. The high-intensity tremors set-off a tsunami alert along Central America’s Pacific coast. As the aftershocks of the earthquake were felt till Mexico City, many buildings and roads were collapsed and damaged leaving the citizens panicky.
Mexico is located at the intersection of three tectonic plates making the country world’s most seismically active location. It is especially vulnerable to earthquakes because it is situated on top of an ancient lake bed.
The medical staff in hospitals tried to calm anxious COVID-19 patients. Unable to evacuate isolation areas, patients huddled under their beds or in special wards. Teresa Jurez could only wish for it to pass quickly from her hospital bed where she lay connected to oxygen. Diabetic and with high blood pressure, Jurez said she thought about her five children. It's horrible, you're here and you don't know what to do, she said.
The June 23, 2020, M 7.4 quake near Oaxaca, Mexico occurred as the result of reverse faulting on or near the plate boundary between the Cocos and North American plates. (Links and details: https://t.co/EbnLsHEI70)
