Keeping the ultimate fight for last, Daredevil: Born Again season finale presents a fitting end, keeping us eager to watch Matt Murdock return to vigilantism with his team for the next.
“It’s not dark, it is like a thousand suns.” Matt Murdock has always been a vigilante designed by his principle to save people without resorting to killing. Although he ia a lawyer who puts on a mask and works in the shadows at night, he never allows himself to stray beyond the law. As the city falls under the control of people disguised as saviors, the season finale gives us insight into what to expect from Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox). He is all set to fight the darkness with his alter ego and save his city with the help of his own set of Avengers.
By the end of episode eight, we discovered that it was Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer) who ordered the hit on Foggy Nelson. Following up from the same, we see a flashback of her meeting with Dexter, also known as Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), admitted in a facility and gaining his trust despite her husband's actions toward him. This season was also about us realising that Vanessa, who appeared to be an art connoisseur in love with the Kingpin, is just as dangerous as Fisk. They truly are a match made in heaven, or should we say Hell’s Kitchen? His blood-stained shirt that somehow resembles the painting they admire and her red dress symbolise their efforts to take on the city and make their plan a reality.
We now understand that Project Red Hook is essentially Kingpin's strategy to create a city-state within New York's borders, free from customs and taxes. This initiative allows him to thrive while he pretends to be the savior and Mayor of New York City. This just further proves how Fisk is the ultimate villain in the city, always finding ways to get what he wants. Watching him smash Commissioner Gallo’s (Michael Gaston) head with his bare hands, brand every rogue cop a part of his Anti-Vigilante Task Force, put the city under martial law, make vigilantism illegal, and put the people who stood against his plans in cages, highlights his ruthless approach to power.
Meanwhile, a recovering Matt is eager to uncover more details about Foggy's murder. He is restless, dejected, and waiting for more clues to help beat Fisk, who unfortunately always succeeds. Heather, on the other hand, is left without any explanation and has more doubts about the truths Matt has hidden from her, all to maintain her trust in Mayor Fisk. Despite all the setbacks and fallout, Matt excels in one thing - keeping his hope alive.
While the 'partners in crime' work their way to achieving their plan, the one refreshing bit is watching our dynamic trio back together. Although we were expecting Frank aka Punisher (Jon Bernthal) to make a comeback, especially after his powerful appearance in episode 4, it was truly exciting to see Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) stand beside her two guilded lovers/vigilante friends. She has a unique way of bringing out their true selves, even when they are masked in their suits, adding more depth and character to each of them. It's interesting to see Matt grapple with his inner demons, striving to uphold his principles and avoid crossing any lines, while Frank is unafraid to unleash his Punisher persona. He brings out the most intense and bloody fights, which is surprising for something produced by Disney.
It's also satisfying to watch him paint the town red, while the cops turn up as pseudo-Punishers claiming to be inspired by him. And like we would expect, he manages to drop another impactful monologue, reminding us of the pain that makes him take on his alter ego, as opposed to what the cops think the reason is.
The finale provided answers to some of our questions, although it was disappointing not to see more of characters like Bullseye, Ava Ayala, and BB Urich. However, the hint of a possible return of The Defenders and a post-credit scene that sets the stage for the Punisher to have his own series made the Daredevil: Born Again season finale a fulfilling experience for Marvel fans. It featured impressive fights, outstanding cinematography, and a cast that has made it difficult for us to separate the characters from the actors themselves.
