Hridayapoorvam

Spending time with family, enjoying some personal time, and sharing a hug - these are the feelings you'll experience after watching Sathyan Andikad's Hridyapoorvam.

In a time when we are bombarded with supernatural, violent, and commercial mass movies, discovering a few simple, heartwarming stories is all we truly need. A film you can sit through with your family and watch, not just to experience it but to spend quality time together. Sathyan Anthikad’s Hridyapoorvam is that sweet, nectar-filled blossom that instantly makes you smile, leaving your heart full. A straightforward story expanded into a two-hour film, it follows a linear storyline with moments of joy, laughter, and occasional conflicts to keep the plot engaging. Every element you expect from a Sathyan Anthikad movie is present.

Following Sandeep Balakrishnan’s second chance at life after a serious heart surgery, Hridyapoorvam explores and celebrates life’s small moments. While he returns to managing his cloud kitchen and Jerry, his nurse, follows him around to care for him, he is visited by his donor’s daughter, Haritha, who invites him to her engagement. A kind gesture that he accepts, more out of guilt and gratitude than willingness, which transforms into a series of light-hearted and wholesome moments, enough to keep you engaged throughout the entire film.

What makes Hridayapoorvam a bearable watch is that instead of seeking logic or reasoning about the plot, you enjoy watching these characters live out their lives. Although you have questions about why the family decided to let a complete stranger stay at their home just because he received the heart of someone they loved, or how Haritha had all that free time even when she was the founder of her architecture firm, you don’t feel like raising them. You are content simply to watch them exist and share parts of their lives that often make you laugh, relate, and understand them. Like every quintessential Sathyan Anthikad film, Hridyapoorvam focuses on human emotions, while also raising a very peculiar point that makes you pause and think.

The reason we keep going back to Sathyan’s movies and consider them comfort watches is that his stories are deeply rooted in society. Instead of glorifying the world around us or adding unnecessary embellishments, he presents his narratives as they are, allowing their raw and grounded nature to take centre stage. There is a certain calmness in watching these stories, which is also what you experience while watching Hridayapoorvam. You won’t be overwhelmed by loud action, flashy lights, or confusing plots. Everything is simple, relatable, and deeply comforting.

Another remarkable aspect of these films is the characters, who often feel like people we have encountered, known in passing, or hope to meet someday in our lives. Mohanlal's character, Sandeep, feels like an extension of his 'ettan' persona, reminding us of an elder brother who is moody yet dedicated to his work, while also being caring and friendly to anyone who approaches him. The addition of Jerry (Sangeeth Pratap) to his life further enhances this persona. Sangeeth brings comic relief to an otherwise soulful scenario, illustrating how it's possible to form deep attachments to others. It's a delight to see Mohanlal team up with Sandeep, effortlessly bringing laughter to the audience. Haritha (Malvika Mohan) is the daughter who finds it difficult to accept her grief, trying to find comfort and the presence of her dad in the person she never knew before. Meanwhile, Lalu Alex, Devaraj T, Amal Thaha, and Arun Pradeep add that extra magic to this already comforting story.

Movies become iconic due to the people behind them and the stories they tell. There's nothing quite like seeing an iconic duo come together, as it often evokes happy memories for those who grew up watching them. Hridayapoorvam serves as a reminder of the classic stories created by Sathyan Anthikad and Mohanlal, which will always be cherished as comfort movies we can return to. While this film may not reach the same heights as those legendary films, it is still a movie worth watching and can provide moments of laughter you can share with your family.
