Kaalidhar Laapata feels like a warm hug to those who are currently trying to find meaning in life. Here’s why!
Kaalidhar Laapata review: Sometimes family isn’t defined by blood, it’s defined by the unexpected core relationships you make along the way. Madhumita Vijay’s Kaalidhar Laapata banks on the same philosophy. It is the journey of a man who unknowingly took the wrong path only to find himself at the right destination. As you see the story unfold, it only puts a smile on your face! Revolving around the main character, Kaalidhar (Abhishek Bachchan), who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Kaalidhar starts finding it difficult to navigate even the basic things in life. His family, who's least bothered to take care of him, only look at him as a burden and an expense they don’t want to take on. Hence they make up a plan to leave him at the Kumbh Mela and report him missing just so that they don’t get punished in case he is found. Here’s where Subodh (Zeeshan Ayyub) comes into the picture as the cop who makes it his mission to find Kaalidhar, to fulfill a wish that he made in his personal life.
As a confused Kaalidhar tries to find his way back home, he finds himself getting down at the wrong station where he meets Ballu (Daivik Baghela), an orphan who works at a temple nearby and is smarter than anyone else around him. The two become friends and change each other’s lives for the better. Ticking everything off a bucket list, earning for yourself, meeting your long lost love, doing everything your heart once desired - what starts as an upsetting journey for Kaalidhar turns out to be the happiest experience of his life. The film tugs at your heart mainly because of what Bachchan and Baghela’s equation brings to the table. It’s pure, there’s banter but there’s also having each other’s back no matter what! It’s a beautiful reminder to everyone that there are still so many people you haven’t met and still so many versions of you that you haven’t seen. It urges you to start living for yourself.
Set in a rural town in Madhya Pradesh, the film’s small town vibe only adds to the calm and comfort of the story. And as I was watching Kaalidhar Laapata, I couldn’t help but think of Laapata Ladies, even though both films have completely different stories. Both bank on the similar philosophy of finding yourself as you’re lost in a town you know nothing about. Maybe movies like these that don’t need to rely on a huge star cast, big budget, or high-octane action, but just a good story, are needed now more than ever. Or maybe we need more female directors like Madhumita Vijay to come forward and let their stories see the light of day! With a bittersweet ending, Kaalidhar Laapata leaves you feeling warm on the inside and makes you want to watch this one with your family because it is, at the end of the day, celebrating a family that doesn’t exist on paper but feels so right in your gut!
Kaalidhar Laapata is currently streaming on ZEE5!
