The late Sangeeth Sivan’s final project, Kapkapiii, starring Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade is hilarious, if not entirely terrifying, haunt.
At a time when disturbing news takes over our social media feeds daily, coupled with the stress of our tiring routine, I'm sure our minds often crave an escape that you can fit into your busy schedules and the one that rejuvenates you to slip back into it seamlessly. And nothing better that helps this cause better than a goofy, frothy, brain-rot comedy. Think of a plot, fit in a group of aimless but entertaining youngsters, and add the tadka of romance - that’s a buddy comedy for you. Kapkapiii follows a similar troupe except there’s no plot but a lot of madness to keep you entertained till the end.
Kapkapiii, the remake of the 2023 Malayalam film Romancham, follows the story of a group of broke friends with no jobs and endless time for monkey business, and their misadventures with a homemade Ouija board that invites a ghost named Anamika to their house, unfolding a mad saga of chaos, confusion, and spooks. The film introduces us to this group consisting of six housemates, out of which only one has a job, the others are happy freeloaders who always have their heads in the cloud with chai, jokes, and roast sessions making up most of their days. This affable gang is led by Manu, essayed by Shreyas Talpade, who, like the rest of his friends, is a jack of all but master of none but is brimming with confidence.

What the group does next is a fitting example of ‘an empty mind is a devil’s workshop’, Manu, upon learning about the concept of an Ouija board, gets intrigued about the world of spirits and presses his friends into joining him and contacting ghosts. The judaagu person that Manu is, he creates an Ouija board with a carrom board and what begins as a joke leads to them actually summoning a ghost, turning their lives hilariously upside down. Just when you feel things cannot get any more chaotic, Tusshar Kapoor as Kabir, Manu’s old friend makes a goofy entry. Kabir is awkward, mysterious, and creepy at times, which makes the audience and the gang wonder if he is the source of the trouble. However, his hilariously traumatic past makes the gang, especially Manu, sympathize with him and overlook his eccentrics until an event changes their perception of him forever!
The film’s strength lies in its vibes. This isn’t a regular horror-comedy with a notorious ghost awaiting his or her redemption. This is a simple, silly yet smart presentation that relies on its writing and the chemistry between its ensemble cast, which keeps you completely invested. You're not scared as much as you’ll giggle throughout the film. The zesty dialogues, slightly offensive jokes, the comic timing of the characters and tight direction do wonders for the overall experience of the film.
Helmed by the late Sangeeth Sivan of Kya Kool Hai Hum and Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 fame, this one too has his name written all over it for its fearlessly unapologetic humor and harmless fun. Kumar Priyadarshi and Saurabh Anand have penned the dialogues of the film, some of which, despite being regular ‘PJs’ with a twist, surprisingly work! Shreyas Talpade and Tusshar Kapoor’s chemistry is electrifying and are an absolute delight in the film; their shenanigans and reactions to Anamika’s tricks will tickle your funny bones however, there is no logic here, just pure vibes. Dibyendu Bhattacharya’s cameo is another high point of the film; his ability to leave an impression despite limited screen time is phenomenal and I can’t wait to see him in comic roles hereafter.
Overall, Kapkapiii is a chaotically funny and slightly spooky experience which isn’t a groundbreaking film but one that manages to deliver entertainment with a mix of nostalgia, humor, and light chills. It’s an impressive farewell by Sangeeth Sivan, wherein he's done a fine job blending genres and handling the film with a massy approach.
