Only Murders in the Building season 5

The three first three episodes of the notorious murder mystery series are out and it keeps getting spookier!

Only Murders in the Building season 5 premiere: Before I get into details about the first drop of the new season, I think we can all agree on the fact that The Arconia needs some serious security! Including this season, there have been five murders in the building. In the real world this would be considered insane but in the Only Murders universe, it’s just another Tuesday! In season one, it was Tim Kono (Julian Cihi), in season two, it was the darling Bunny Folger(Jane Houdyshell); season three dealt with the murder of the famous actor Ben Glennroy (Paul Rudd) and the previous season saw Charles’s stunt double, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) take the plunge. Just when you start thinking how much murder is too much murder, the new season kills the most wholesome character on the show!

Lester(Teddy Coluca), the doorman. Yes, the harmless, warm-hearted doorman! The one who noticed everyone, gave company to the lonely tenants in the building, knew everyone inside out. That poor old man was found dead in a bloody pool of fountains. What a way to go after dedicating his whole life to The Arconia, right? But just when you wonder how the infamous trio will manage to surprise us, episode one ends with a cliffhanger you never expected coming your way. We have our leads Mabel Mora(Selena Gomez), Oliver Putnam(Martin Short) and Charles Hayden Savage(Steve Martin) solving yet another crime to bring their beloved doorman’s murder to justice instead of just believing it was an accidental death. Does their case solving include them discovering new secret alley ways and hideouts inside their building that they didn’t know about? Hell yes! Do they find out there was more to their beloved doorman than just being a doorman? Of course!

So far, the new season feels like old New York meets modern day crime podcast. Every show has its one breakthrough episode. As someone who has been following the series since its very first season, I can concur that episode two of the new season is just that for this show! The episode is all about Lester’s backstory and who knew a supporting, yet often neglected character like him could have such an amazing journey to show us? You best believe the old man left me in tears by the end of it. What is New York without its doormen afterall? They’re the ones who run the biggest buildings in the city. The ones who, like Lester says, either send you off to the world outside or welcome you back home! It’s intriguing how his past connects to his murder and it’s about time the trio figures it out.

It is always a delight to watch Steve Martin and Martin Short share the frame together and they continue their witty banters and hilarious one-liners in the new season as well. Selena Gomez as Mabel feels more wiser and composed this season. The soundtrack as always elevates the mysterious atmosphere of the show, especially during moments of cliffhangers. The iconic title track in particular will always stay cemented in my mind. Only Murders in the Building makes murder mysteries look so aesthetic with its vintage chandeliers and the larger than life building that The Arconia is. Not to mention, no matter what the situation is, the characters always show up in style with their chic coats I’d love to steal!

The first three episodes had no sign of Meryl Streep but there are new additions to this season. Just when I thought I could give up on this show, it pulled me right back in, the 70s New York way (if you know, you know!). The point is not that five murders in a building make no sense at all, the point is, they made us believe it seamlessly each time and I'm rather curious to see how this one ends!
