The series checks all the boxes for a quintessential K-drama and the performances on top of that, make this a must watch!
Spring Fever review: There’s nothing like finding a K-drama that keeps you entertained every week, to the point where you actually wait to see how the story unfolds. The plot of course is the main reason why we keep going back, but if the leads are also too good looking to be true, it just adds to it being your new favourite obsession. Spring Fever is exactly that and more! It’s serious when it has to be and frivolously brain rot when the story calls for it and you are equally invested in both the arcs!
The series starts with Yoon-Bom(Lee Joo-Been), a teacher from Seoul who shifts to Shinsu to start a new life after a traumatic incident back home. She is emotionally guarded, barely speaks and keeps to her work. But her world turns upside down when she crosses paths with Sun Jae-Gyu(Ahn Bo-Hyun), one of her student’s uncle/only guardian. He quite literally disrupts the stillness of the town just by his presence. He is a giant in size but only few know that he actually has a big heart and there is nothing to be scared about when it comes to him. As the two get to know each other, they feel drawn towards one another, especially when Sun Jae-Gyu often comes to Yoon-Bom’s rescue in various situations.

Just like Yoon-Bom, Sun Jae-Gyu has a past of his own. Forced to raise his sibling’s child in her teens, Sun Jae-Gyu had to grow up way before his peers did. But he never let his nephew, Han-Gyul feel the absence of a parent. Hence, in a world full of judgement, Sun Jae-Gyu and Yoon-Bom became each other’s solace. The drama isn’t too complicated or overburdened with too many arcs that it can’t handle. It’s about the life of these two leads in a small town that has other characters like the second lead aka Choi I-Jun(Cha Seo-Won) who is Sun Jae-Gyu’s ex best friend and some one who likes Yoon-Bom too. There are a group of teachers who work at the same school as Yoon-Bom and add to elevating the story as supporting characters.
It was refreshing to finally see Ahn Bo-Hyun as a lead in a rom-com and finally get the due credit he deserves. He is delightful to watch on-screen as Sun Jae-Gyu. Everything from his bulked up physique just for this role, his height, his dialogue delivery in his satoori accent, and the way he goes weak in the knees for Yoon-Bom every time he sees her screams peak K-drama hero in every way! His pairing with Lee Joo-Been was one we didn’t see coming but glad it happened anyway! Their chemistry was steamy yet heart fluttering as the couple navigated their relationship through different stages.
The conflicts resolve in half an episode, the misunderstandings between the leads don’t frustrate you, there’s no one particular villain in this story who you want out of the way. It’s light-hearted, easy on the mind and does not demand a lot out of you as an audience. Maybe that’s exactly what we need amidst stories that either leave you shook or go right above your head these days. Spring Fever is that wholesome story that reminds you of classics like Reply 1988 and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha where swoon worthy romance and a second shot at life go hand in hand!
All episodes of Spring Fever are currently streaming on Prime Video!
