Two Much with Kajol and Twinkle Episode 1 delivers very little sass, witty banters and insightful convos!

With Kajol and Twinkle Khanna as hosts and Salman and Aamir as guests, the premiere of Two Much should have been a firecracker. Instead, it was a dull and predictable!

Veteran celebrities stepping into the role of a talk show host is a brilliant concept. Their comfort and familiarity with other stars often lead to the kind of hearty, honest, and hilarious conversations that we, the audience, crave. So, when it was announced that Kajol and Twinkle Khanna- two women synonymous with sass and sharp wit- would be hosting Prime Video’s new celebrity chat show, Two Much, my excitement knew no bounds. The trailer, too, added to the hype around the show, however, the first episode featuring Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, two of the biggest superstars of our time, fell surprisingly flat, failing to deliver the unfiltered banter and quick-witted exchanges the promo had promised. With Khanna, known for her sharp and unfiltered commentary on various issues, and the no-holds-barred Kajol hosting the evergreen Khans I was totally expecting some insightful questions, quick snapbacks and a lot of fun chaos however all I got for an hour were some generic questions, low energy games, lack of chemistry between the hosts and polite laughters. The only saving grace of the episode were some candid confessions by the guests about battling mental and physical health issues, dealing with break-ups and parenthood. However, these too were on surface level devoid of any insight or revelations that they haven’t already shared in any interviews before.

Right from the start the episode felt lacking an easy flow. It began with a quirky introduction of the two guests, who were then taken to ‘grazing table’ where they were supposed to be fed before the ladies started to grill them, maybe as the concept of the show. Bhaijaan looked uninterested and Mr. Perfectionist enjoyed some dabeli, while the two ladies tried to inject some humor which definitely did not work. After the awkward opening, the conversations finally began with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan opening about how they first met, and how their friendship began. As mentioned earlier, the discussion then went to Aamir opening up about his failed relationship, marketing skills and Andaz Apna Apna, nothing that we don't already know about.

Salman the saviour

It took some time for Salman Khan to warm up to the conversation, but once he did, he came across as the saviour of the episode, especially when he opened up about his last meeting with Kajol’s father two days before his passing, his battle with trigeminal neuralgia and how he navigated life while enduring the unbearable pain, which accounts for maximum suicide related to medical conditions. He also shared his honest take on relationships, fame and industry friendship before expressing his desire to embrace fatherhood, adding some much needed colour and character to the episode.

Aamir’s progressive take on therapy

Another highlight for me was Aamir Khan opening up about seeking therapy and explaining how it works when Salman Khan jokingly said he should have come to him instead of opting for a professional. He also confessed about his regrets as a father on which Salman Khan tried to ease him. The two were also asked about the age gap between co-actors and why it's more acceptable when an older male actor romances a much younger actress than the other way around, a topic that has been at the center of public discourse in recent years. Their answers were diplomatic, as expected, however, the response wasn't met with the fiery counter that you would have fully expected from feisty ladies like Khanna and Kajol. While Mrs. Funnybones tried to cross question with some sarcastic one-lines, the DDLJ star rather played it safe without pushing much.

Ultimately, the first episode of Two Much With Kajoland Twinklefelt like a missed opportunity. What promised to be an uncensored chat with two of the biggest stars being at the geniune best, delivered some superficial conversations and forced humor. While there were fleeting moments of genuine honesty, they were too few and far between to save the show from its dull concept, unexciting games and the lack of chemistry between the hosts. We can only hope that future episodes finally tap into the sassy, cheerful and sharp-witted potential of the of the ladies, giving the show the some colour and personality it desperately needs!
