Would You Marry Me review

While Would You Marry Me started off strong, it lost its emotional core by the end of it and it definitely isn’t something you’d expect out of a highly anticipated drama!

Would You Marry Me review: When Choi Woo-Sik, who we have previously loved in romantic dramas like Our Beloved Summer and Melo Movie, andJung So-Min, who we saw in Love Next Door last year are paired together, it’s safe to say there’s going to be a lot of hype around the K-drama. As someone who has been a Choi Woo-Sik fan ever since I started watching K-dramas, I know for a fact that I’d watch anything that he is a part of, not just because I’m a fan but also because I trust him enough to know that he’d pick the right scripts.

In today’s world where new K-dramas are released every week and fans have to chalk out an entire schedule of what to watch when, the competition to stand out is pretty high! Did Would You Marry Me look like it had something different to offer in the midst of all the overflowing content? Absolutely not! But did I hope for it to surprise me in a way I didn’t expect it to? One hundred percent! Would You Marry Me was every K-drama cliche coming together. Whether it is childhood friends-to-lovers, a fake marriage trope, heartbroken second leads, a villainous family member and an annoying ex, you name it! But regardless of that, I watched it to let it pull me into its emotions and probably even not be as predictable as I thought it would be. Sadly, it did none of those things for me!

Would You Marry Me revolves around Yoo Me-Ri (Jung So-Min), a graphic designer who is also a bride to be. But before she walks down the aisle, she finds out about her fiancé’s infidelity and a fraudulent lease on her new home. But to protect her new house that she won in a contest for married couples, she has to now find a man who has the same name as her ex-fiancee. Conveniently, she meets Kim Woo-Ju (Choi Woo-Sik) one night. He is the heir to one of Korea’s oldest bakeries, Myungsoodang. As a marketing team lead, Woo-Ju wants to prove himself to his grandmother and he’d do anything for that. This leads to him being in a fake marriage situation with Yoo Me-Ri and the chaos of hiding their lie is where the crux of the plot lies.

The show starts off with an interesting premise but as it progresses further, a lot of the scenes start to feel like fillers instead of actually leading up to something. The story simply does not give us enough of ‘rom’ or ‘com’ to feel invested in the plotline and that’s because there are way too many sub arcs going on at the same time. The second leads in particular feel like a wasted opportunity. Bae Na-Ra and Shin Seul-Gi did the best they could for their characters but it felt like there was potential to explore so much more there and possibly even make their story way more intriguing than the leads’. Choi Woo-Sik and Jung So-Min also commit to their characters but the chemistry just wasn’t it for me! With K-drama leads today dominating the internet with a plethora of reel edits and shipping them in real life, Woo-Sik and So-Min’s chemistry is nowhere near to competing with something like that!

With lack of good K-drama OSTs and an average climax, Would You Marry Me definitely isn’t Choi Woo-Sik’s best work and while it deeply saddens me to say that as his fan, maybe the next time we’d see him with a better script and a storyline that actually has us hooked from start to end!
