In addition to hosting the ICC T20 Men's World Cup 2026, India went on a run, breaking record after record before its momentous win against New Zealand.
Cricket is a crazy game where you never know when the odds will turn against you or when the match might slip from your grasp. Every match feels like walking on a tightrope, much like the semi-finals against England. But in the ICC T20 Men's World Cup 2026 final, the odds seemed to favour India. Team India faced New Zealand, a team they've struggled to beat in this format, at the infamous Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, a ground known to be unlucky for India. Their hard work was put to the ultimate test, as they managed to bring the cup home with a 96-run win.
Just as the Women in Blue made history last year by winning the World Cup for the first time in 52 years, the Men in Blue created history with a landslide victory over their biggest rival, New Zealand. Captain Suryakumar Yadav, along with Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Rinku Singh, not only made history but also broke and set multiple records. The most significant of these was becoming the first country to win three T20 World Cups, followed by hosting and winning the cup on home ground. It also marked them as the first team to win back-to-back World Cups.
The records don't end here. Throughout the tournament, Jasprit Bumrah took 7 wickets, out of which 4 wickets were taken in this finale. Meanwhile, everyone's chettan, Sanju Samson, scored 89 runs off 46 balls, the highest score in T20 World Cup history, helping India achieve its humongous 255 score. With a total of 321 runs throughout the tournament, Sanju became the Player of the Tournament. Ishan Kishan's two crucial diving catches sealed the fate of the match. With so many records broken and set in a single game, the internet is buzzing with reactions and celebrations.
Here's how the internet is celebrating the win:
