Sudhana Sankar

For this week's Friday follow, we take a look at Sudhana Sankar and her incredible dancing skills that has left the internet in awe.

If there is one statement that should not have any hate is that ’Dancing is a mad talent and people who can actually do it are dope.’ Imagine having the ability to bring rhymes and notes to life, there is nothing more incredible than that. It takes a real ability to be able to catch every beat and it deserves all the love that they can get. And when we come across artists like Sudhana Sankar, it makes the art of dancing feel even more special.

Sudhana has her own style and if one has come across her content, it is impossible to not be in awe of her. She may have taken the internet by storm with her adaas and nakare, and she claims to be exactly the same in her real life too. Too excited to hold still and always grooving. Sudhana is part of the early birds club who starts her day working out and not missing out on any chance to flex those biceps. But what you can also witness if you spot her on the road is her "twirling instead of walking like a normal person." Apart from being into workout and dancing, Sudhana is also a model. According to her, while she enjoys striking a pose professionally in front of a camera now and then she also loves acting out imaginary scenarios in her room.

The quote 'We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing' is something that reminds Sudhana to continue taking risks for the things that she loves and rejoice in the rollercoaster ride that life offers.

Despite all her interest dancing is something that she finds herself attracted to. While talking about dancing Sudhana says, "Dance was woven into her life when I was five years old, and it has stayed with me like an elder and wiser sister ever since," and we believe that, considering how her digital journey began.

She may have started popping up on our screens only recently but that journey was a happy accident, like literally. A great example of limitations breed creativity, she began creating videos for her Instagram after she injured her leg while rehearsing for a show and had to get surgery to fix it which left me on crutches on and off for two years. But that did not keep her from finding ways to stay connected to dancing. She took that time to sit and work on my expressions. “I would explore new characters every day and I slowly fell in love with storytelling. But I rarely posted anything.” But it was actually the pandemic that helped her channel all her pent-up creativity on social media and created a stage of her own when the real world could not offer any.

As she saw this new world unfold in front of her as people began loving her for showing off her skills, she appreciates all the positive parts of being part of the digital space. She says, "In a world that gets a kick out of pulling each other down; social media, as brutal as it can be, has been incredibly kind to me (Don’t jinx it, Sudhana)" At times when she feels low or inadequate, she finds herself scrolling through her DMs and comments. She reflects how people she barely knew have been able to put a smile on her face and helped her get through the toughest day.

Apart from all the unknown strangers who have been able to flue her passion for dancing encouraging her to continue putting out entertaining content, she also loves her fellow creators. She finds herself inspired by all the other dancers on the platform. When asked if she would like to collaborate with any of them she said, "You would have to give me a separate blog post if I were to mention that I love since 90% of the people I follow are dancers! But the idea of collaborating as a classical dancer, with dancers from different styles across the world excites me very much."

A classically trained dancer, Sudhana tries her best to convey a story within 15 secs of time. From angst, love, anger, longing, and playfulness, she plays each emotion with sincerity convincing the audience to watch the same video on loop.

She video on the song ‘O Ri Chiraiya’ that she created for C.R.Y Foundation is an excellent example of her skill of being a storyteller along with her dancing ability. "I truly explored my urge to tell powerful stories that matter and make one think."

When asked where she finds her inspirations from she said, "Running the risk of sounding like your stereotypical artiste here, but I am still going to go ahead and say that every moment has room for inspiration. At the end of the day, I am trying to show real people with real emotions through my choreographies, so what better way to draw inspiration than to observe the world around you?"

Have you received any DM from your followers that stayed with you?

"Once a girl told me that her mom would binge-watch my videos almost every day when she was unwell and made her follow my account. And we all know that a mother’s validation is, well, the mother of all validation!"

What are your hopes for 2022?

"It is to say something cool enough for Yashraj Mukhate to make a song out of. Just kidding. I think after years of creating, albeit only a few, I have finally found my niche. And it makes me happy to see my voice finding its own space and audience. The goal for this year is to take more risks within this niche, engage with a diverse audience, cast a wider net, and hopefully turn this into a more viable stream of creative expression.

On a side note, Hi Yashraj."
