The Serpent is a crime drama series developed by Mammoth Screen and commissioned by the BBC. The show tells the story of how the conman and murderer Charles Sobhraj (Tahar Rahim) was eventually caught and imprisoned. Posing as a gem dealer, Sobhraj and his girlfriend Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman) traversed Asia in 1975 and 1976. Where they committed a spree of crimes along the 'Hippie Trail'. Dutch diplomat Herman Knippenberg investigates the disappearance of a young couple and soon catches up with Interpol's most wanted man.
As per the report by Buzzfeed UK, the show got a green light to be made in 2017 after being in development since 2013. The first part of the shooting started in Thailand in 2019. But the rest of the shooting couldn't be completed because of the pandemic hit and the European cast and crew had to go back. They decided to finish the shoot in London recreating the whole place. The series is on BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Netflix globally. It released early in the UK than globally.
