Chhaava trailer

The highly anticipated trailer of Vicky Kaushal’s Chhava is finally out and here are our first thoughts on it!

Chaava trailer: The trailer begins with a voice saying ‘the king of Marathas, the Chatrapati, is no longer alive and soon enough, the mughals will conquer the Maratha Samraj’. To this, Vicky Kaushal makes his powerpact entry and says, ‘The King is gone but his shadow (Chhaava) is still alive.’ and we see first visuals of him as Sambhaji Maharaj. This wouldn’t be Vicky Kaushal’s first rodeo starring in a biopic but it sure is grander than the ones he has been a part of before! While we see him perform high octane stunts that would garner him many whistle worthy moments in the cinema houses, his accent and his mannerisms just donot feel Maharashtrian enough.

Maybe this is an opinion that might change post the film’s release or it might not, only time will tell! The trailer also shows us the first glimpse of Sambhaji Maharaj’s goal of keeping the Maratha dream alive and not letting the Mughals conquer them. You see many montages of Vicky Kaushal sword fighting, climbing trees, winning in a combat with a lion (of course!) and dancing in his palace like Ranveer Singh did in Bajirao Mastani with Bajne De Dhadak Dhadak. He has cheeky moments with his Maharani Yesubai played by Rashmika Mandanna. Unfortunately, even she feels like a South queen dressed in Maharashtrian attire.

But the one who does steal the limelight here is Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb. There’s an eeriness to the way he has approached the character which is needed for someone as evil and twisted as Aurangzeb. He is ruthless and he is here to cause a bloodbath amongst the Marathas, which is something he makes clear from the very beginning. To see all of this drama unfold amidst larger than life sets and A.R. Rahman’s music helps elevate a historical saga like this one!

It is refreshing to see new Rahman music and the makers not going for another done and dusted Arijit Singh rendition! In the trailer, we also see stills of the rest of the cast which includes Divya Dutta, Ashutosh Rana, and Neil Bhoopalam. Produced by Maddock films and directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava is a larger than life historical saga waiting to unfold on the big screen! But is it all style and no substance or the complete opposite is a verdict that’ll be out in the coming few weeks!
