Kishan Jhunjhunwala’s desi twist to the BTS world makes all of us doom scroll on his feed for a little bit of K-pop and a little bit of humour!

Whether you’re a BTS fan or not, everyone loves a good sync between songs from two different worlds they never saw coming together! That’s exactly what Kishan Jhunjhunwala aka Jhunjhunastic’s feed looks like and it’s addictive to say the least! If there’s one thing that BTS and Bollywood have in common it's their love for music and over the top choreographies and, as a BTS fan, I always wondered how the seven members would react to dancing to songs I have grown up listening to and Jhunjhunastic brings the answer to that question a little closer, one video at a time.

Never would I have ever thought I’d see the biggest K-pop group in the world match their beats to songs like Slow Motion Angreza, Ainvayi Ainvayi, Ramta Jogi, the Dhoom title track and so many other songs that give us a much needed serotonin boost! It’s a beautiful reminder that dance, at the end of the day, is a universal language and as long as the beats match the intention of the song, it can be translated through various different cultures. A part of me actually wants one of these synced Reels to reach at least one of the BTSmembers so they know how much India and its desi culture has to offer them and open doors to a whole new world!

In a candid conversation, he tells us what it really takes to sync these together!

How did you first come up with the idea to sync BTS choreographies with Hindi songs? What inspired you to start such niche but unique content?

It was with the collaboration of PSY and Suga of BTS on ‘That That’ and I thought, well this looks kinda badass and funny. If only I can find a Bollywood song that can match the vibe, I could maybe make it funnier and enjoyable to the masses!

Was there one specific BTS choreography that made you think, “This would fit perfectly with a Bollywood/Hindi track”?

That choreo was Permission to Dance. I know people have been syncing Boy With Luv to multiple songs for a while now, but for me it was PTD.

How do you manage to keep up with everything new that’s happening in the K-pop world?

Honestly, I am not much into K-Pop. For me, it's only BTS as of now. And I guess my timeline is enough to give me all kinds of updates about it. Although, some updates do sound fake and I do a cross-check before believing in those.

Walk us through your creative process from choosing the BTS dance clip to the Hindi song. What are the most important things you look for?

There’s no such process to it. I have watched BTS music videos an unhealthy amount of times. Not just the choreo, but the music videos, the vibes of different performances and the dance steps are kind of engraved in my head as of now. So, whenever I am vibing to a Hindi/Bollywood song, there would be times that a random BTS choreo would pop into my head and I would say, “Hmm, interesting. Maybe we can do something about it.” But I think all this in Hindi and it doesn’t sound as well put together in my head.

What’s your criteria for a ‘perfect sync’? Is it beat matching, emotion, tempo, or something else?

The perfect sync comes from the energy. You can match a happy song with a sad one, and it would be funny, you can somehow match the beats and tempo using slow and fast motion, but if you’re able to find two songs with the same energy, or even better, with the same meaning, that’s the best!

Have you ever faced any challenges with copyright issues, if yes then how do you tackle something like that?

I have. I try to keep the clips shorter in that case. Less than 20 seconds works most of the times.

Out of all the BTS choreographies you’ve worked with, which one was the hardest to match with a Hindi track?

It was definitely I Need You. The choreo had so many hooks and steps. I have been trying for ages to make a perfect sync video on that but I have been failing for a long time now.

Have you ever had a song you really wanted to use but couldn’t make it fit the choreography?

I want to make an edit on Ruk Jaa O Dil Deewane, but I have never been able to match a BTS choreo for that.

You’ve gotten high engagement on these videos! How do BTS fans (ARMY) respond to your edits? Is there any reaction from them that stuck with you?

All of their reactions are stuck with me, and no I am not exaggerating. I read all the comments, I see them happy, I get happy. Its that simple. And also, many a times, I have failed to meet their expectations with my edits, and they always supported and appreciated my efforts. Their responses are the reason I have been continuing this for years. Saranghae to everyone.

Do you feel your work helps connect cultures - like bringing Hindi songs to BTS and BTS songs to Indian audiences?

I don’t know this yet. I feel that whenever I try to make edits on different videos, I do kind of put it out there for the non K-pop fans that BTS has a huge discography, some kickass choreography and beautifully portrayed MVs. I don't know about bringing Hindi songs to BTS, but I am definitely bringing a little bit of BTS knowledge to the Indian audience.

What advice would you give to aspiring creators who want to experiment with cross-cultural video edits like yours?

Consume more and more content. The more content you consume, the sharper your brain would work. Video editing isn’t just about using some tool to sync, it's about how much you’re aware of the music videos, or live performances or even just some interviews. This way, whenever some music pops up in your head, you can easily think about which video it would go with.

If BTS actually danced to one of your Hindi song syncs in real life, which song would you pick for them and why?

It’s a dreamer's dream, and yeah I am a dreamer! I think I made an edit once on Nachde Ne Saare with BTS choreo of Permission to Dance at the UN. I think that would be perfect.

Where do you see your content evolving in the next year - more storytelling, theme series, or maybe long-form projects?

I am thinking of doing a music video theme this year. Rather than picking up just their choreography, I would pick up the theme of their music video and make longer videos on them. I think that would be a challenge for me and that’s what I love. Not only this, I plan to explore more K-pop groups this year like Seventeen, TXT, Twice and Big Bang. So, I hope for the best!
