We’re more than happy to see Choi Woo-Sik and Jung So-Min star in a quintessential K-drama rom-com. Here’s why!
Would You Marry Me premiere review: K-drama rom-coms have multiple sub-genres at this point and us as audiences have been accustomed to most of them by now. From chaebol romances to childhood best friends to time travel being a recent favourite, we’ve truly seen it all! But one that always manages to keep us hooked is the fake marriage trope. There’s just something exciting about the leads pretending to be married until they actually fall for one another. The climax is no rocket science to us, but we enjoy the ride anyway! Park Min-Young and Go Kyung-Pyo’sLove in Contract,Shin Min-Ah and Kim Young- Dae’sNo Gain No Love have been highly successful K-dramas in the past that were based on the fake marriage trope.
Based on similar lines, Would You Marry Me’s first two episodes set the premise for us. Me-Ri (Jung So-Min) catches her husband cheating on her and the two file for divorce. But when she wins a house in a lucky draw for married couples, she finds herself in a pickle given her situation. Here’s when she stumbles upon Kim Woo-Joo(Choi Woo-Sik), a man who shares the same name as her former husband and begs him to help her out. Woo-Joo denies her request out of his guilty conscience but when fate makes the two meet yet again in a workplace scenario, he is compelled to agree and help her out. Of course, it goes without saying that the situation is bound to become chaotic with the constant covering up and fooling everyone around them!
Choi Woo-Sik, as Kim Woo-Joo, took us right back to his Our Beloved Summer era and we’re waiting to see him be the ultimate rom-com lead as the story unfolds further. Not to forget how the glasses and his outfits in this show make him an absolute eye candy to look forward to every week. Jung So-Min as Me-Ri brings a certain charm to the table that kept the story interesting so far. There are parts of her you feel bad for and parts where she is an absolute mess, but you like her anyway! From chaebol drama, a traumatic childhood, a toxic ex who lingers around, a past connection between the leads that’ll eventually come out and second lead heartbreaks, the show seems to have it all and we’re only intrigued to find out more! Even though Woo-Joo and Me-Ri are bound to fall in love, the build up of when and how that happens is exciting enough to keep us hooked to this one and potentially give us all the peak K-drama feels after a long time!
Would You Marry Me is currently streaming on Rakuten Viki!
