The 3 Shaukk Reel is a nostalgic high-five to a generation who grew up glued to their television sets after school, watching Boogie Woogie!
In an era where social media platforms brim with quality content that is at war with each other to conquer our attention, my inner 90s kid and I cannot help but keep returning to the viral Reel featuring Jaaved Jaaferi and his son Meezaan grooving to the peppy beats of 3 Shaukk from De De Pyaar De 2 for a millionth time now! If you're a 90's or early 2000's kid, the viral dance video isn’t just a Reel but a genuine pop culture moment that was soaked in nostalgia, and the love it has been getting stands as a sweet testament to it.

It was nothing short of a time machine that took me back to the good ol’ Boogie Woogie days, where my weekend evenings weren’t about stressing over Mondays but watching my favourite dance masters at work. Aired between 1996 to 2014, it was India's OG dance reality show that operated on starkly contrasting values than its modern successors. It was a competition that celebrated dance in its purest form without the scripted melo-drama, and sob stories that are an integral part of the spectacles today! But wait, that doesn’t mean the show simply featured one dance performance after another.
The segue between two items was nothing short of a treasure trove for dance and film enthusiasts as our ever-entertaining judges, Jaaved-Naved Jaaferi and Ravi Behl made it memorable with their filmy qisse, classy banters, and JJ’s near-perfect mimicry of countless celebrities from across the globe! As Jafferi pointed out in a promotional Reel before the song dropped - “Ye aaj ke dance ki shuruwaat humne hi ki thi” (We were the pioneers of modern dance in India); the show and JJ in particular were indeed the pioneers who introduced the country to western dance forms, especially break dancing, which inspired a generation of unparalleled dancing talents in the country.
Even after all this, I feel his dance legacy is somewhere overshadowed by his multi-hyphenated brilliance in comedy, mimicry, voice-over, and acting, of course! I know I speak for a lot of millennials and Gen Z that the first images of JJ that crop-up in our mind are that of him fighting the giant in Jajantaram Mamantaram, the iconic Indian adaptation of Gulliver's Travels or of the innocent Manav dressed in colourful dungarees, who is an active participant in the misadventures of his brother’s gang in Dhamaal. And last but not the least, his legendary Hindi commentary of the Japanese game show Takeshi's Castle!
Having said that, I’m glad that this Reel is forcing the spotlight back onto his sharp, age-defying moves, showcasing his masterclass in versatility yet again. The 3 Shaukk Reel also feels like a beautiful convergence of two eras with JJ’s technical effortlessness and Meezaan's energy meeting together to offer some Gen Z swag with Gen X flair, one that also serves as a visual handing over of the family's rich dance legacy!
