Backed by Ektaa Kapoor, the iconic Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is set to return to the small screens from July 29.

For an entire generation of desis, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (KSBKBT) isn’t just a show, it’s a nostalgic trip down the glorious lane of Indian television, where stories brimmed with melodrama but the heart and innocence just made up for it! Spanning almost a decade, KSBKBT was a daily ritual, a cultural touchstone, and mind you, a topic of serious conversations among its viewers. Such was its popularity that it dominated the prime time slots for eight long years in ten years of its run time, and when the makers announced its return on Tuesday, the internet couldn't keep calm as the excitement and anticipation for the show reached fever pitch.

It all started in 2000, and although my memories of the episodes are as faint as that of a forgotten dream, I still somehow remember the plot of the show thanks to some weekend discussion with my extended family, cheeky mention in movies and the notorious memes that kept popping on my feed now and then long before the return was announced. The show somehow managed to always remain a core part of our collective ITV memory and that’s what makes it so iconic.

It is usually said that ‘films idealise men and objectify women, whereas TV idealises women and objectifies men’, and KSBKBT religiously reiterated it. The daily soap featured the Virani clan, a prosperous and traditional Gujarati household headed by the formidable matriarch Savita Virani (Aparna Mehta) and her ideal daughter-in-law, Tulsi Virani (Smriti Irani). Their complex relationship, often ridden with misunderstandings but also underlying love and respect, formed the bedrock of the show. While many remember the now hard to stomach twists (The legendary Ansh Gujral) the sudden leaps, unexplained deaths, and miraculous plastic surgeries, the primary appeal of the show lay in its portrayal of traditional Indian family values, with some added tadka of exaggerated drama, pervasive background score, and shoddy screen freezes, of course. It was a concept that captured the imagination of millions of Indians who found resonance in the familial dynamics, traditions, and emotional dilemmas showcased in the series. It also marked the beginning of Ektaa Kapoor's reign and the unforgettable age of ‘K-series,’ which dominated the Indian Television space for the longest time. Remember the kind of impact the opulent sets, elaborate ethnic costumes, and jewels had on our aesthetics, particularly during festivities and other cultural programs? Insane!

Cut to 2025, the iconic TV serial is all set to make its comeback after 25 years, which will see Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay reviving their roles as the beloved Tulsi and Mihir. The makers unveiled the first promo of the show, leaving fans excited.

For many, tuning into Star Plus at 10 PM became a muscle memory, as the show offered 30 minutes of a mesmerising escape into a world of domestic drama - a great dinner time companion that ensured we laughed, gasped, and shed tears together for characters that felt like one of our own. Though the television landscape has drastically changed since, the indelible mark left by Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi continues to evoke a strong sense of nostalgia, delight, and a reminder about simpler times!
