Allahabad is renamed as Prayagraj and Twitter has been vocal about its feelings. Brace yourselves Allahabad Prayagraj tweets are here. 

After UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath instigated the idea during his visit, Uttar Pradesh government approved the proposal after ‘some’ debate .

While political parties are using it to throw shots at each other. The general population is filled with mixed critiques. Some say changing the name wouldn’t solve the existing problems (FACTS), while some say Prayagraj was the name of the city originally and was changed by the then ruler Akbar.

For whatever reasons, the renaming wouldn’t make a positive impact but it wouldn’t make a negative impact either apart from the hassles the civilians have to go through due to this action.

Prayaga existed for 1000s of years before Mughals invaded India from Uzbekistan. Rig Veda has Yadu, Druhyu, Puru, Anu & Turvasa tribes. Father of these tribes' founders was Yayati.

Yayati was from #Prayagraj. He conquered Sapta Sindhu.

Restoring an ancient name is NOT renaming.

Lately I have traveled to #Allahabad frequently. The city is in shambles, desperately needs better roads and infrastructure especially given the fact that the #MahaKumbh is barely 3 months away. Shouldn’t that be priority over name changes? #Prayagraj @myogiadityanath

Apart from scoring political brownie points, let us not forget that changing names of cities leads to massive (unnecessary) expenses.

Allahabad(oops), Prayagraj is amidst a lot of problems like deteriorating air quality, issues in hostels owned by various trusts and universities, outages of cellular networks, weak infrastructure and more. While the Uttar Pradesh government is at changing things, they should probably change these situations too.
