A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

There’s a lot of homework to do before we dive back into the Game of Thrones universe next week and we’ve got you covered with all the deets you need to know!

It’s been a while since we obsessed over George R.R. Martin’s world of Westeros fantasies. After Game of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon, the franchise is now going to expand with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms starting next week. But much like its predecessors, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms isn’t about the kings and queens of Westeros; it’s about the common folks and will be a lot more slow paced than the other two dragon flying stories.

The Game of Thrones universe is based on books written by George R.R. Martin and HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is no exception. Based on novellas calledTales of Dunk and Egg, this one follows characters Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg. The story begins with Dunk traveling to the town of Ashford to participate in a competition as a newly-knighted knight. The first season will follow the first novella, The Hedge Knight, which is less than 200 pages, a contrast to Martin’s other works in the world of Westeros, which are known to be quite long. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already been renewed for a second season, and the rest of the show is expected to follow the rest of the novellas in the series, The Sworn Swordand The Mystery Knight.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place nearly 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, which means if we see this in terms of chronology, this is a sequel to the House of the Dragon and if you’re not familiar with the ending of HOTD then this show is going to be a spoiler for you (as if Game of Thrones wasn’t already). The first novella, The Hedge Knight, begins after Aegon’s conquest during which King Daeron II Targaryen leads the seven kingdoms, and Prince Baelor Targaryen serves as his Hand. At this point in Westerosi history, the last of the dragons have died and while the Targaryens still sit on the Iron Throne, they will not have dragons until Daenerys Targaryen’s storyline in Game of Thrones

Ser Duncan the Tall travels from village to village to serve as a knight for the commoners. Until he meets Egg, a descendant of the Targaryen family. We’ve also previously heard about Ser Duncan briefly in a Game of Thrones episode when Jamie Lannister talks about his valour and how the book about knights is filled with his adventures and stories. The cast includes Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall,Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg,Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon (another intriguing character to look forward to!), Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen, amongst many others. The six episode series is set to premiere on JioHotstar, January 18 onwards!
