In a year dominated by franchise legacies and familiar faces, a few standout characters from the Hindi web series of 2024 captured our hearts in fresh, unforgettable ways. Here's a look at the ones we couldn't get enough of!

This year, the streaming landscape was dominated by returning franchises, continuing the legacy of beloved characters in new seasons. From Mirzapur 3 to Kota Factory 3, Gullak 4, Taaza Khabar 2, and Maharani 4, it became increasingly difficult to create a list of standout characters. After all, how do you place someone like Guddu Pandit or Jeetu Bhaiya—characters we've loved for years—into a fresh list? Yet, amidst this sea of familiar faces, 2024's Hindi web series introduced some new characters who managed to leave a lasting impression. With their charming personalities, relatable struggles, and memorable quirks, these fresh faces found a way to stand out.

Although many shows didn't quite meet expectations, and familiar characters went through some new changes, a few stood out for their depth, wit, and complexity. These characters weren’t just memorable because of stellar performances by the actors but because of how they were written and explored. Their arcs resonated with us long after the screen faded. Whether they enchanted us with their wit, stirred empathy with their chaos, or won us over with their eccentricities, these characters made their mark in unique ways and defined our streaming experience this year!

Radhika, Suman, and Avinash – Raat Jawaan Hai

Selecting just one of the three friends from Raat Jawaan Hai is difficult because despite each character bringing something distinct and relatable to the table, Radhika, Suman, and Avinash are only complete with each other. Their childhood friendship navigates the complexities of marriage, parenting, and adulthood and remains deeply intact. It offers a comforting constant that serves as a beacon of loyalty and love despite the chaos of life! 

Mallikajaan – Heeramandi

Heeramandi introduced several breathtaking characters, but none were as compelling as Mallikajaan. While Bibbojaan and Fareedan also leave their mark, Mallikajaan's enigmatic, ethereal presence sets her apart. She embodies the true spirit of a tawaif—both bound by societal chains and simultaneously free, wrapped in mystery and allure!

Prahlad and Dadi – Panchayat 3

In a show beloved for its heartwarming characters, it’s hard to single out any one person but Panchayat 3 saw Prahlad and Dadi steal the spotlight. Prahlad and Dadi's raw honesty, earnestness and wisdom brought the franchise fresh layers of resonating authenticity. Together, they redefined grief and old age, showing how these life experiences can bring both vulnerability and strength. 

Shekhar Home – Shekhar Home

Though Shekhar Home is a middling adaptation of the British classic Sherlock Holmes, the titular Indian detective makes an intriguing impact. With his Bengali flair, kurta-clad appearance, and sharp detection skills, Shekhar Home stands out as an Indian take on Holmes. He is an exciting start for a desi detective!

Sujata Negi – Maamla Legal Hai

In Maamla Legal Hai, despite a series of heartwarming characters, Sujata Negi, a practical yet hopeful lawyer, emerges as a character you can root for. She is well-versed in the bureaucracy yet remains emotionally connected, often going out of her way to help those in need, representing professionals' daily struggles, the art of growing up and quiet resilience. 

Mukul Mohan – IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack

With so many key characters to focus on in IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, it’s tough to stand out, yet Mukul Mohan manages to make an impression. A government officer with a sense of humour and a skewed, stereotypical worldview, Mukul presents a flawed yet relatable human being, mainly representing what the show tries to do in this retelling of history! 

Teeka Ram Jain – Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper

CA Tribhuvan Mishra is filled with eccentric characters like Tribhuvan Mishra, Bindi Jain, and Shobha Pathak, as well as overtly weird, shocking situations. However, Teeka Ram Jain becomes the unexpected highlight. A halwai who moonlights as a contract killer gangster, he is a fascinating portrayal of a man grappling with masculinity, providing a unique take on an otherwise quirky show. 

Sardar Vallabhai Patel – Freedom At Midnight

Freedom At Midnight gives a human face to historical figures. Sardar Vallabhai Patel stands out as one of the most compelling characters. His portrayal as a diplomat who never wavers in his loyalty while holding firm to his own beliefs provides a fresh perspective on a figure often overshadowed by Gandhi and Nehru in popular culture. This nuanced portrayal helps contextualize Patel’s significant yet understated role in shaping modern India during its most turbulent times.

Bae – Call Me Bae

Call Me Bae is a show created for a generation that loves brain-rot content! And Bae, with her fashionably stylish expression, a mix of humour, relatable quirks and pop-culture references, is easy to love without the need for heavy introspection.

Swathi Shetty – Killer Soup

Swathi Shetty stands out amidst the chaos in the dark comedy thriller Killer Soup. A survivor in every sense, a resilient Swathi finds herself in an extremely messy and dangerous situation but refuses to give up. Her ability to navigate through the madness reflects the strength of a woman determined to protect herself at all costs, making her a testament to survival despite overwhelming odds!
